Louis and Ali defended against far more number one contenders and top 10 fighters than any other heavyweights in history. Leapai wasn't even a top 10 fighter unless you buy into these fabricated titles nowadays.

I have Farr-Burman recorded from ESPN Classic. Not a whole fight and Farr won, not sure if thats the first or second fight.

The argument I'd use for Leapai being a similar level of title defense is the work they did to earn their shots, in the previous couple years.

Leapai beat Boystov(top 10) and a few fringe guys. I don't see the guys Burman beat leading up to Louis as being that much, if any, better than that

A lot of journeymen on Burman's record at that time and the few names in there that he did beat had probably slipped to journeyman status themselves.

Actually, I don't even think Leapai was some sort of horrible defense, though the effort he put in was pretty bad. He had a few minor wins and then beat a top 10 guys in an eliminator-not the worse you could do.

He is a weak defense and there's plenty of guys I'd have prefered to see Wlad face but I see guys like Leapai and Burman as two similar type of fighters who happened to get shots. Far from the best but not the absolute worst either.

Wlad's brother was the #1 contender for the last 5 years.

It wouldn't be so bad but Holmes also avoided the most #1 RING contenders and mandatories.

    RING#1 contenders:

    Dokes
    Coetzee
    Thomas

    WBC Madatories:
    Page

Also avoided much called for rematches against Weaver and Spoon

    Finito Lopez?

Really that's about it, though. So any of his lesser challengers from the 90's would be up for consideration alongside Leapai.

    Yamil Caraballo, then?

13-4-1 heading into his bid, having bagged some minor titles beating guys with losing records, without a single notable W.

Lasted all of a minute while challenging the lineal champ, going down hard off the first punch thrown with conviction:

Surely he is worse than Leapai.

...or Kitichai Preecha. He entered with a 7-3-1 (1) mark, stopped thrice, once by a debutant and once by a 12-17-2 fellow. This man of Siam actually fared better than our Colombian pal Caraballo, getting past two feeling out sessions with Finito, but then got thoroughly wiped out by the first three-punch combo he saw.

 don't do anything without passion.

I'm ususally surprised by how good Lopez's opponents are. I think they usually look much better than you'd expect, it sort of comes with the territory.

That Preecha KO is one of the best KOs. The punches just get better as the combo winds on, including the one he misses.

Some of them were terrific - obviously Preecha and Caraballo notwithstanding. :!:

...unless you mean they both 'looked the part' of professionals and not lads pulled off the street without a lick of coaching a day in their lives evident in their stance and form and everything...in which case yeah they both looked to know where to hold their fists more than many a man with records as bad as theirs...but they were still abysmal challengers for the lineal champ of even the most sparsely populated division in the sport. :verysad
