Name me one person who Calzaghe has beaten that Hopkins wouldn't have?

I dont think Hops would have lost to him, but Sakio Bika would have given him kinds of problems.

Joe never had a real off - night in over a decade, no loss to a fighter he was supposed to beat. Consistency is so underrated in boxing and single wins over an ATG are overrated. Many decent but far from great fighters have a great win on their record, Norton over Ali, McCall over Lewis, Taylor over Hopkins, Thadzi over Toney etc. But who can stay in boxing for over a decade and never be below his best to the degree that an opponent can take advantage of it? Certainly no Hopkins....he was supposed to beat Taylor handily, struggled with an old Winky Wright, lost his very first pro fight. Yes, he has greater names on his resume that Joe, but is beating Trinidad or DHL above their best weight really better than beating Eubank, who afterwards jumped to cruiser and came close to winning a title there?

 

Okay... I know im a dane (and obviously a big Kessler fan).
But i dont think that you should write off a prime Kessler vs an old Hopkins, remember Hopkins always looked best against smaller guys. He lost to Jermain Taylor who i consider to be quite similair to Kessler (However, Taylor may be a bit faster and a bit more aggressive, Kessler on the other hand has better punching power and a better jab).

 

Not hating on Calzaghe, but he didn't fight a diverse number of styles imo, a lot of the guys he fought were straight ahead kind of guys, where as Hopkins fought people like Winky, Taylor, J D Jackson, Tarver.

Calzaghe fought defensive fighters, sluggers, speedsters, technical boxers, swarming infighters, Hopkins, boxer punchers, heck, he even fought Eubank.

Calzaghe fought a lot of styles throughout his career. You just have to watch through all his fights. And it's a pain, because you get to watch his fight with Starie and that was the crappiest fight I ever saw him in.

In all honesty, I don't believe there's anyone on Hopkins list that Calzaghe couldn't have beaten. Same way around actually.

So why are we having a fruitless discussion again?

 

I disagree. The only top fighter Joe fought, that was slick, or a refined type of Boxer, and was at world level, was Hopkins himself, and Idont think he looked particularly good in that fight.

You could claim Eubank, but Eubank was not a good defensive fighter, he just liked to counter punch, he wasn't hard to find, as he did't like fighting at a high tempo, and his footwork wasn't the best to keep from getting drawn into a fight imo, which is one the reasons Joe was able to get to him and overwhelm imo.

Starie? with respect, he was a domestic level fighter.

Winky, Tarver, Taylor, J D Jackson would of given Joe plenty of stylistic issues to overcome imo.

 

Debatable, certainly not the Eubank Clazaghe faced.

 

A style is a style is a style. Starie beat Clinton Woods, and also only lost via points against Sven Ottke years later. That's more than just domestic. And even if he was to be considered as one, styles make fights. You can look crappy against a crap fighter and still be good.

Winky doesn't work hard enough and is too small for JC. You'd end up with a Pac-Clottey or a Williams-Wright one sided decision.
We've seen Tarver get mauled by Hopkins and Hopkins never fought as hard as JC.
Taylor looked real bad against a smaller man who used speed and angles on him in Cory Spinks. JC is bigger and will undoubtedly be about as fast and unorthodox.
JD is too small for Calzaghe in physical terms, Calz is a guy who weighed in over LHW at his fights, and would get bullied to a stoppage.

In this generation, Hopkins and Calzaghe are the two best guys that can ruin peoples' gameplans and actually have the smarts, size and strength to pull it off. The difference is Calzaghe is busier and faster.

And it's not like people have ever walked through Calzaghe's slaps. No one has ever walked through them, and he throws a thousand of them so you can't say he can actually be beaten by guys Hopkins wrecked.

 

Probably none.

But it doesn't take anything away from Calzaghe's carrer (because thats clearly what you are implying...:tired)
