Imo, Mayweather-Maidana 1 was a backfire on Mayweather's part. He figured El Chino was a walk in the park but ended up in one hell of a fight and was saved by the judges. People were saying that Maidana won that fight or drew with Money May. Are there any other fights you can think of that backfired?
Victor Ortiz vs Josecito Lopez Ortiz was suppose to win and them go up to battle Canelo. Got his busted by Lopez.
Shane Cameron versus David Tua. Tua had been out of boxing for a few years and Shane Cameron was locally getting a lot of hype - he was someone I never quite saw how he earned the kind of hype that he was getting, and called out Tua who was keen to return to boxing and that seemed a good way to get his profile back up. The perception was that he was probably well past it and everyone thought Cameron was a monster and that it was like throwing the supposedly way past it Tua into the lions den - I remember being the only person at my work place who thought Tua had a chance, let alone expected him to win. We all went to the pub to watch it with everyone all prepared to mock me senseless when the inevitable replay of "Lennox Lewis versus David Tua" fight happened (that fight was the evidence that Tua as a joke) and I still chuckle to myself about how the fight actually played out. Honestly, I still don't know how so many people (at least in NZ) convinced themselves that Cameron had elevated to such a level that people were effectively comparing him to Lennox Lewis, but nonetheless the amazingness of watching the dude who was cherry picked to make Cameron look good demolish him in a brutal fashion only Tua could
Floyd always is. You see how they start off slighting Floyd from his Bronze medal to the Castillo fight to the Maidana fight and the IV lol...
