Seems like in the modern era, if you get a rep of being chinny, people never let that go no matter what else you do.

That wasn't always the case. Muhammad Ali was dropped twice before he became a champ and buzzed a few other times and was considered chinny at first. Later, the boxing public came to understand he not only had a good chin, but had developed arguably an all time great chin.

Here are a few people that get called chinny that I think have at least an average chin and probably better:

Wlad: kd'd alot, but often from repeat kds after he was already knocked senseless because he refused to quit. Never failed to get up. Went the longest stretch of time as champion without suffering a knock down in he he history. Took an insane uppercut from AJ that would have decapitated others. I'd say on the balance he had an average to above average chin.

Fury. Like Ali, kd'd twice before becoming champ. But took a few hard shots from an ATG power puncher in Wlad without showing ill effects. Let hard punching Joey Abell bounce punches off him for fun. Appears to have average to above average chin. (Has an opportunity to go up alot if he survives Wilder)

Wilder. Was down once in his career to a journeyman. Never down since and took hard shots from a great puncher without going down. Appears to have an average or better chin.

I thought each of them were chinny at some point in their career, but I looked at their entire career at a certain point, and allowed the evidence to change my mind.

Name a modern fighter that had an early rep for being chinny that you decided had a decent chin after all.

    Joshua.

After the Whyte fight I thought the likes of Klitschko or povetkin would only need to land clean with a decent shot and he'd be out

    Jacobs is a good call.

Wilder for me though. He took some bombs from Ortiz.

I never thought Wlad was chinny, ditto for Lewis. Granted they don't have the best mandibles ever, but it took exceptional circumstances / power to put them down.

This. You cant keep a title as long as Wlad did and be chinny, same with Lewis. They are Heavyweights, they gotta expect the odd occasion of getting dropped or stopped through their careers, too much size and weight if they connect properly

Not too modern but barerra was thought too be chinny after the Jr Jones fights but went on too more than prove his chin and durability.

Perfect example. People are way to quick to label boxers chinny after a ko loss

David Price. I thought he was just chinny, but after being Koed while still on his feet vs Povetkin and being a sitting duck before being leveled by that left hook, I have changed my mind, hes double chinny.

Wilder was dropped twice in his career instead of once. He showed a solid chin vs Ortiz though.

Marquez was thought of as Chinny at one point even though he's never been stopped, plenty KDs but always got up and often was better after the KDs in his fights.

I thought he was chinny physically and mentally but later in his career he proved to be one tough SOB.

There are three different kinds of chins:
1- Margarito/Mosley type: you hit them with the sink in the chin and they don't go down.
2- Julian Jackson/David Price type: you hit them flush in the chin and they got disconnected from consciousness.
3- Juan Manuel Márquez/Maravilla Martinez type: you hit them flush, they go down, get up and keep fighting.

Looks like Wilder, Fury, Beterviev and others could be of the third type... but who knows...
