    Do they, honestly?

I get the impression a vast majority have barely seen Calzaghe on this forum. If they don't know **** now, they sure as hell won't in a decades time

Calzaghe is more likely to be overrated in future years, because boxing fans are stats whores and boxrec warriors.

That's the problem with basing P4P rankings on results against one opponent.

Taylor beat Hopkins. Twice. Unlike some I scored both of those fights for him. But that doesn't prove anything other than that he's a high class boxer and had the perfect style to beat Hopkins.

I assess him on that and how he performed in subsequent fights, where he did not show himself to be P4P quality.

It seems illogical to me that people can say that Taylor was a top ten P4P fighter before fighting Pavlik, then he wasn't after. Did he detriorate? Not in my eyes, his performances were exactly at the level I expected (and I expected Pavlik to beat him). If somebody ranked Taylor top ten P4P prior to fighting Pavlik and then dropped him to (say) 22nd after, then they are saying one of two things: either Taylor has deteriorated substantially as a fighter in that time, or that they have reassessed him as a result of further evidence and realised that there initial rating was too high.

Well it will work for him in Europe, or the UK at least. In the US, not many boxing fans credit him for much because they don't believe he's accomplished much. His fight with Hopkins was unimpressive, and this is a 40+ Hopkins - an old man by most people's terms. Of course Joe was 36 at this point ... but when Hopkins was that age he had knocked out the undefeated Tito Trinidad. Whether that's an accomplished in Europe, who cares because it goes both ways.

Not a problem mate. I never fell into the trap some did of thinking Jermaine Taylor a P4P top ten fighter.

And what is Mikkel Kessler? He seems to be rated rather highly by Calzaghe fans.

You have to take accomplishments into play, rather than simply ability. Taylor was always limited to ability over skill, but he took that pretty far with what he had, before eventually being stopped by a prime, superior style.

Number one at SMW. In P4P terms mid teens seems a fair reflection of his current achievements.

I'd probably rank Pavlik ahead of him for his undefeated record and impressive manner of victories. That's possibly harsh on Kessler though given he picked up his only defeat fighting a consensus top three P4P fighter in his own home town, which is clearly above anything Pavlik has yet taken on, and Kessler has had very impressive victories of his own against the likes of Andrade, Mundine and Beyer.

Barrera could be taken into account, though he certainly didn't seem at his best for that particular performance. That should be not to Pacquiao's discredit though.

I was taking accomplishments into account.

But it only goes so far. Taylor had a style that allowed him to beat Hopkins. That's fine as it goes, but if I'm going to call someone one of the best ten fighters in the world, then I want to see more than an ability to beat (excellent) opponent.
