For me without a doubt its Joe Gans.

Gans is the fighter I just "forget" about and I always leave him out of rankings, then remember a little while after that I stuffed up.

    Pretty poor effort I know.

It has been pointed out to me my that I really really need to see some more of Wilfredo Gomez's earlier work. Though I am thoroughly impressed with what I have seen, it had occured to me most of the fights I own of him and have seen were after his 122 days.

A recent example might be actually Kelly Pavlik. I have always had my doubts about him but have been proven wrong many times before he was beaten. Thought Zertuche was pretty even money fight because I knew nothing of his chin..proven wrong. Leaned towards Miranda because of his more proven beard and experience at the top level..proven wrong. Said Taylor would be to skilled for him in the first fight..proven wrong again. Thought the rematch would be a 50-50 fight and I wasnt far off there but Kelly continued to show his ability.
Actually picked him to beat Nard like most probably but I for the life of me could not see how so many people thought he would be knocking Hopkins out. I used the words "nightmare" and "close fought" to describe how that fight would go. In the end maybe I gave him to much credit :D

Funnily, even as a Hopkins fan I thought he would lose to Tarver, Winky and Pavlik but thought he beat Calzaghe. He always proves me wrong

I rated Marciano outside of the Top10 for a long time but before I abondoned my rankings he made it to the number 3 spot. Similar for Barnes Ross and Mickey Walker. Harold Johnson is another one I often forget.

I always overlooked Lennox Lewis. I still believe he gets overrated slightly these days, but he's a lot better than I used to give him credit for.

How highly do you rate Serrano? He wasn't all that IMO, so you're probably justified.

I probably still overlook Jim Jeffries to a degree, still need to learn more about him admittedly.

A lot of fighters prior to the era of substantial footage, primarily the ones around the turn of the century or thereabouts. When it comes to that time frame, I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot. Definitely not an era I'd feel totally comfortable debating in depth, a few fighters aside. That's why I tend to shy away from posting much in those threads, although I enjoy reading them.

:deal I'd go along with that. Well put.
I'm fairly savvy on my history but i wouldn't pretend i know anywhere near the full lot.
There is some guys in here who's comments i love reading, who will say things that get me thinking.
I then realise i don't know as much about so and so as i thought i did.
A thread was made about Harold Johnson a while back, right then and there i knew this is a fighter i had overlooked and need to know more about. Especially because he is my type of fighter.
