burt made a comment in another thread that made me think of this topic. what are some fights from yesteryear that may have had a different outcome if they were fought now?

example would be moore and durelle. there's a very high chance that today a ref would have stepped in and stopped this fight in the first round.

also, dempsey-willard probably would have been stopped in the first as well.

    other possible examples?

I wouldnt be so sure Dempsey Willard would be stopped in the first. Dempsey would not have been allowed to stand over Willard and hit as he got up. That could totally change the outcome of the fight.

    Same with Dempsey-Firpo.

Corbett-Jeffries and Corbett-Fitz might have seen Corbett win both (over twelve rounds).

Johnson would have beaten Willard on points. Just the change in distances of fights (which I dont think is a good thing) has altered the outcomes of many bouts.

That could be applied backwards as well. Hopkins-Taylor 1 and 2, as well as DLH-Trinidad would have all had different results had they been 15, 20, or unlimited round bouts.

good points. i didn't even consider fight distance but more from the fact that some fights wouldn't be allowed to continue like they used to.

Ray Robinson vs Carmen Basilio II
Basilio would have lost by TKO from that horrifically swollen eye.

Corbett could have been a huge winner, looking back on things, depending on how Corbett Jackson went for the first 10 rounds, I cant remember who had the better of the fight.

Fitz also, might have been a big winner, particularly if he actually go the nod against Corbett. Even if he didnt, he still would have went on to stop Jeffries (tko) and he would have went on to probably got the second decision against O Brien after 12 (even if it might have been controversial), be ruled out of the Johnson fight and last until Bill Lang beat him. In reality, in modern times it is unlikely that the fight would be held in the burning sun, so it is unlikely he would have run out of gas and he probably would have held on for the decision.

    Both Liston-Clay fights.

Today's anti-racketeering laws might discourage those kind of rigged fights.

I have written the same about Willard - Dempsey ... If Dempsey did not stand all over him and keep clubbing him who knows how it plays out ...

Dempsey-Willard would've been over after the first knockdown today IMO - he was too badly hurt for it to have been let go today and I'm guessing the facial damage inflicted (Dempsey felt Willards cheek go under those first few shots) would've been fairly evident to a ref right there in the flesh. He would've taken one look and called it today -not too long ago Lennox Lewis was dropped like a sack of spuds by one shot from Oliver McCall and tottered around a bit when he rose and the ref waved it - no way does Willard get let go

yeah, i think for sure by the third knockdown, the fight would have been stopped today. hard to believe the first lennox-mccall fight was almost 20 years ago.

Ezzard Charles would have TKO'd Marciano in their second fight with the hirsute, Lilliputian Son of Abruzzo's nose dissected.

Dempsey would have been KO'd or DQ'd by Firpo as he required and received the help of ringside sycophants (the ever objective press corp?) to regain his equilibrium and access to the ring.

This :deal. Although I think the Firpo fight is another where (3-knockdown rule aside) Firpo would've been stopped on the 4th knockdown anyway so it wouldn't have got that far (in fact that's the one thing I don't think they stop fights for these days - DQs are pretty rare these days in big money fights - because there's too much mone riding on them - I think these days they only do DQs as an absolute last resort when there really is no more choice - even Tyson-Holyfield went past 2 ear bites and one chunk of eye bitten off!??

Doubtful ... it was a beautiful shot without question ... that being said, Willard looks more shocked than hurt and gets on steady legs ... all this talk about the broken face bit is legend ... it was never that severe and did not come from one punch ... if Dempsey was not able to pound the guy as he got off the canvas it easily could have been the type of fight where a much younger , better conditioned , active fighter wears down a much older, inactive fighter and either stops him along the way or wins a sloppy, hug filled decision ...
