Ezzard Charles and Emile Griffith. I like and respect both but they were very workmanlike. No flash or pizazz. Usually only working hard enough to stay just out in front of a guy. Obviously could be capable of much more but they typically only kicked it into the next gear when forced to.

I'm coming around a bit. I do think his punching power was below average now.

No shade on Hagler tho. He was a tough & talented fighter & I'd pick very few mw's to beat him h2h. However, I just feel he had no special skills that stood out. He did everything good, but nothing particularly exceptional.

I might be wrong here but in all my years on the forum i have never seen anyone describe Nelson as a brilliant boxer. A brilliant fighter maybe but style wise he was never a boxer as such in the true sense of the word. He was a jack of all trades and the sum of his parts made him what he was.

From what I understand, McVea was more skilled on the back foot than offensively.

Viewing it in that light, the footage makes more sense, but he still looks very crude.

Brilliant. I could've wrote this myself. Thanks for a real and in depth analysis of some
of the "best" fighters of the last 20yrs.

Another fantastic post - and an example of why you're one of my favorite posters.

Ok, it doesn't quite beat the "camel toe" thing (nothing does!) - but it's certainly up there with some of your best "work".

Both were gentle souls at heart who saw an opponent die after they had fought them. That probably influenced them both to perform within themselves. In A J Liebling's book 'The Sweet Science'. there is an essay on the second Charles - Marciano fight and a psychologist lends the opinion that Ezzard would win, if he could unlock himself mentally and 'unleash his inner tiger'.

    Great essay. Great book.
