As boxing fans, we often love a good boxing rivalry especially when 2 great fighters get it on. But it gets even better if there is a round robin rivalries where multiple great boxers don't duck each other and are desperate to see who reigns supreme. If you don't know what I'm talking about regarding round robin rivalries, the GOLD STANDARD of the greatest round robin rivalries of all time would be the Fab 4 of the 1980s (Hagler, Duran, Leonard, and Hearns). Unfortunately, these type of rivalries don't happen often especially in the modern era of boxing where the talent pool gets increasingly weaker and the fact that best boxers often duck each other due to money/promotional issues (cough, cough Spence and Crawford). But when these rivalries do happen, they are certainly a treat to watch. Please add to this thread on the notable round robin rivalries in the sport of boxing. Here is my list: Joe Gans, Frank Erne, George "Elbows" McFadden (1900s) Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, Joe Jeanette, Sam McVey--Honorable Mention (HM): Harry Wills (1900s) Tony Canzoneri, Barney Ross, Jimmy McLaurin, Billy Petrolle (1930s) Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Jimmy Bivins, Lloyd Marshall, Joey Maxim--HM: Charley Burley, and so many others (1940s) Sugar Ray Robinson, Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, Paul Pender--HM: Joey Giardello (1950s) Rocky Marciano, Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles, Joe Louis (1950s) Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier--HM: Ken Norton (1970s) FAB 4: Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran--HW: Wilfred Benitez (1980s) Manny Pacquiao, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera--HW: Juan Manuel Marquez (2000s) Roman Gonzalez, Juan Francisco Estrada, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Carlos Cuadras (2010s)
Baby Arizmendi, Rodolfo Casanova, Freddie Miller and Battling Battalino. Kid Williams, Pete Herman, Joe Lynch and Memphis Pal Moore. Midget Wolgast, Frankie Genaro, Newsboy Brown and Willie Davis. Young Tommy, Speedy Dado, Little Pancho and Pablo Dano. Bobby Chacon, Boza-Edwards, Bazooka Limon and Rolando Navarrete. Benny Leonard, Freddie Welsh, Johnny Kilbane and Rocky Kansas
I'm not sure, what those "Honorable Mentions" mean? Why is (for example) Ken Norton given an HM - when he never fought Frazier? And since he fought all 3, why is Louis only given an HM in connection with the Marciano, Jersey Joe and Charles group?
Thanks for pointing that out for the case of Joe Louis. I'll edit that. Regarding for Ken Norton, he fought almost 2/3rds of the fighters in that group (Foreman, Ali). It's kinda like how many people consider Wilfred Benitez to be the unofficial 5th King of the Fab 4 even though he never faced Hagler but faced Duran, Hearns, and Leonard. So if Norton fought Frazier, Norton wouldn't be an honorable mention.
Ok, I get what you mean. But if that's how it works, you should also remove the HM for Petrolle, Marshall, Maxim and Pender - who all fought each of the 3 men, they are linked to.
