You sure? Leonard was behind on one card and just ahead on another. From memory Steward said you could see Ray had clearly slipped since the Hagler fight. Not to mention he was sat on his khyber and in quite a bit of danger for a short while.

I'll mention Camacho - Ramirez, superlative fight by Camacho against a very credible opponent. Ramirez fought some brilliant fighters but no-one did him like Camacho.

Joe Louis vs. Primo Carnera. This performance by the Brown Bomber is not usually in the mix for such discussions. I think that is partly due to a lot of people having a poor opinion of Primo, some of which is justified, but, in my view, it is also often overdone. This was a technical masterpiece by Joe Louis and, really, Primo does not look that bad to me in this fight, just overmatched. Anyway, that is my take.

I don't think I have a single fight to cite, but imo, Joe Louis appears to be the perfect boxer.

I don't always rate Louis on top, sometimes I'm real high on Ali or some such, but for me personally what always made Louis special is I was reading about boxing before I started watching it and he seemed like the text book example.

I was just researching more general history at the time and came across Jack Dempsey's book. I believe it's called Explosive Punching: The Art of an Aggressive Defense. I've always been a sucker for every-man sort of history. Commoner stuff. So I read it. Years later while researching ancient history I found Marciano's book by chance and read that as well. I believe it's called "boxing and bodybuilding". Oddly, Marciano was describing techniques known to man since Philostratus' time at least. So I watched him and got a better understanding of his book. I watched Dempsey and likewise got a better understanding of his book. Then I asked the internet whose the greatest and it said Louis, Ali if YDKSAB but those who do, Louis. So I watched him and what I was really impressed with was his level of perfection. The efficiency of movement. Balance, and the ballet of physics. He is what i would call text book perfect. No matter how much I learn, he's still the guy who, imo, displayed the techniques perfectly.

That said, that era was pretty amazing for that in general, imo.

 

Very underrated pick, Louis was as perfect as any boxer who’d been born that night and Primo seemed somewhat competent himself. He sort of had to be, considering the man he was fighting.
