Duran with his power to get to Napoles late in the fight..Napoles fustrates Duran early and is ahead on points over the 1st 10 Rds. but Duran comes on with a strong body assault and a cut opens over Napoles eyes in the 9th..Duran finishes the last 5 rds Strong for a UD

Gavilan-Napoles is as close a 147 fight I can imagine at the moment. I'd like to see why you think Napoles would be a clear favourite Manassa:good

Basilio seems all wrong for me. Iron chin, clever pressure, I think he would stifle Napoles ring generalship with all out swarming, I can't see Napoles A)playing the Matador for the full 15 against Basilio B) managing to get enough points-scorers OR big hooks to hurt Basilio. Napoles was as majestic as they come but Basilio was a force of nature.

Just my opinion, and as you know I hold your in high regard so please reply:good

Well I wouldn't say Napoles would be a clear favourite against Gavilan but I could see him pulling it off by a decent margin. Gavilan's best attributes were physical - I think of him as 'only' a good boxer, not a great technician. What he had was an astronomical physical prowess; speed, stamina, durability. Gavilan was a whirlwind who'd been taught how to box.

Napoles was a natural boxer. He'd twist compact hooks through Gavilan's guard when they exchanged, which I would only expect them to do in spurts through fifteen rounds. Mostly it would be a boxing match and Napoles, despite being shorter, was just better at it. He'd use a simple game and execute it so well; find the range, wait for the punch and then counter.

But let's not forget that Napoles could spring into action at the drop of a hat, in his younger days at least. He would bore in, but with style, battering Curtis Cokes at times like Henry Armstrong. Not just a counter puncher, Napoles could really fight.

Basilio would be too easy for Napoles to read. Believe it or not, I think even Robinson was a step below Napoles when it came to actual technical ability. His method against Basilio was a general one; jab, move, jab, move... And then, in exchanges, hit the nearest target(s) possible. Because Robinson was so quick, determined and accurate, it worked.

Napoles would apply a thinking game. He was more like Archie Moore, planning ahead of time like a pool player rather than a spontaneous talent like Roberto Duran or Willie Pep. Yep, Basilio was strong, but Napoles would turn him and hurt him with punches that Basilio would have been made to walk onto. Now if Basilio fought like Henry Armstrong then I'd give him the benefit of the doubt based on his extra size, but he didn't. It's easy to say Basilio was relentless but he did often sit back and jab, take his time and think about what he was doing. Against a man with such firepower and durability, he wouldn't be as reckless as he was against Johnny Saxton or Tony DeMarco, both of whom Basilio knew were susceptible to him.

Napoles, the supreme puncher, would cut him up.

Good post, still don't agree exactly. I think Gavilan, whilst not exactly SIMILAR to Napoles was similar in the respect that he had an all-round game. He could swing bombs and trade (his power is underrated IMO under 'modern rules' I think a lot of the beatings he dished out would be classed as stoppages, thus making his K.O % higher, he was no banger but with with some force IMO) and could box, although Napoles has the clear edge in footwork IMO, which may well be the key to winning. 50-50 for me.

Whilst I do not agree on your analysis of the Basilio fight is a well-made point and'm not going to plead my case for Basilio. You've made a good counter argument, I still feel Basilio's style would be wrong for Napoles on the scorecards as opposed to him getting KTFO. That is the one outcome I wouldn't bet on happening, a K.O as both men were seriously tough operators.

I also thinks cuts won't come into play as both men are going to be in a terrible bloody state afterwards.

Nice one. I think it's safe for me to use the world famous saying; 'oranges on their own make rubbish tennis balls.'
