I have just discovered this forum and man it is like coming in from the cold! I am 42 years old and grew up watching, Hearns, Hagler, Leonard, Duran and all the great fights of the 80's and 90's. I have lived all over the world and honestly I have never met anyone in the last 15 years that knows anything about boxing or who has any interest in it. Hardly anyone follows boxing any more so to be able to come on here and see all these boxing crazy people is awesome. So I guess I have about 15 years of pent up questions and opinions now!! First off the rank then If I may...I cant think of any other British boxer/fighter more exciting and more willing to fight the top competition than Naseem Hamed...I hated the guy at the time but looking back now and watching his old videos I have to say I cant think of any other British fighter so exciting. Perhaps the only other fighter that came close was Lloyd Honeyghan. I am talking here about exciting style and willing to fight the best and not crumbling when they do (I know Barerra beat him but it wasn't like he was destroyed like a Bruno or a Hatton when they met the top level guys). I dont know what it is about Joe Calzaghe but somehow something was missing for me (seemed to fight the best when past their peak). Anyway would appreciate anyones thoughts on that as I have never met anyone in 15 years who would have a clue what I am talking about!! I am English by the way.
Depends on if you want to get into the semantics of being Welsh or British. But if we're including the Welsh than it is EASILY The Mighty Atom, Wilde.
The worst thing about Hamed is the feeling of lost potential. He was pretty much 26 when he retired. He hadnt even come into his prime. Apparently he suffered from brittlr hands. A common complaint amongst big puncher. I cant stand the fools who go on about Barrera schooling him, meaning he was never that good. Barrera won on points about 8-4,and never had Hamed in trouble and oh yeah...Barrera is an ALL TIME GREAT. And if you believe what you hear, Hamed had already checked out before he ever fought that fight
Hamed was a great entertainer, brought a lot excitement to boxing, probably one of the most entertaining boxers ever but his resume and what he done in the ring doesn't make him the best British fighter ever. Gets in the top 10 though.
There's a few fights that got me into boxing but Naseem Hamed was probably the boxer that hooked me on the sport. It was bitter-sweet even at the time because he was as entertaining as he was cocky it's just such a shame that he let his talent go so totally to waste. If we're strictly talking about excitement of style though I'm okay with saying he's the greatest British fighter ever.
