This content is protected In recent years he has become synonymous with the Barrera fight which has become the poster fight for a cocky guy taking a beating. It’s probably one of the 20 most watched boxing matches of all time. At the top of the list you probably have Ali Vs Foreman, then you have Ali Vs Frazier three, somewhere down the list you have Hamed vs Barrera. People forget that he was 35-0 going into that fight with only a couple of opponents going the distance in title fights, iron chinned Wayne McCullough and Cesar Soto employing spoiler tactics. Finished 98 in the Rings pound for pound top 10 and finished 2000 placed higher than a 23 year old Mayweather pound for pound. He won every major title in his division except for the WBA title which he would have won against Vazquez if Vazquez hadn’t have been stripped for BS reasons. Vastly under rated in my opinion because some of his flamboyant antics didn’t appear overly masculine and people don’t take him as seriously as they should as a banger because of his FW body.
Underrated in his sprinting abilities when fleeing the crash scene of the innocent man he'd just paralyzed. Hopefully it never happens again, what with his arteries being more clogged than the M6 in a bad snowstorm.
That’s true, kind of a scumbag move. That said couldn’t he as just as easily killed himself with his wreck less driving and the other guy come out unscathed? Didn’t seem completely intentional although definitely not cool.
Yeah, you could say that about Kamikaze pilots too. I could be wrong but didn't he also sell out/abandon his original trainer/manager for the dollar? I judge a fighter based on his actions outside of the ring as well as inside. Yeah, he was very skilled inside the ring (just like Mayweather) but equally detestable out of it.
More to his own sense of ego I think. It backfired when he hired a stricter trainer in Manny Steward.
In general, Most boxers are less likely to behave in a pro-social way Following boxers for moral guidance is a horrible spiritual investment, the true reason boxing is watched is the same reason violent movies, & fire-works are watched. Naseem brought the big $ to the lower weights, at that time even Floyd Mayweather was still complaining of Slave Wages. He was excellent at extracting $ & offending peasants-citizens living normal stable lives, which is an excellent quality in boxing.
Emmanuel Steward once said he could've been the best FW of all time. That's high praise for his talent.
Not really he was maxed out of inches at Featherweight similar to how Tank Davis is now, he would have been a better Bantam or Flyweight. At Featherweight, he had a psychological edge, almost like Prime Tyson, boxers wary of his power, either came hyped up determined to trade fire for fire or got very careful. Marco Antonio Barrera remained instrumental & kept a perfect balance between assertiveness & defense. With the psychological advantage eliminated the taller, rangier boxer won. Any ATG Featherweight as tall Barrera should be able to do the same, at Bantam or even better Flyweight Naseem would been a much better boxer.
Absolutely agree with everything you said. I just pointed out the fact that Emmanuel Steward said so, was certainly high praise. It was up to Naseem to prove it which he ultimately failed to do, but for Emmanuel to see that type of talent, there must've been something there.
Could have been the greatest but ill discipline defeated Naz. A focused Naz takes care of business against Berrera imo.
underrated point. The man himself has blamed a tough weight cut as the reason for the Barrera loss. A guy his stature shouldn’t really be struggling to make FW. When there was talk of a comeback after the Barrera loss and Calvin win they were talking about him coming back at super feather or lightweight. There’s an interview with Barry Hearn on YouTube.
Yes he was cocky. Yes he was arrogant. But he brought excitment to boxing, from his ring entrances to his awkard style that was different than everything around at the time and ever since, to his amazing power, his flaws that helped make his fights even more exciting etc.... I miss the little *******(not so lil nowadays)?
