I only recently heard of him, and have been reading up/watching up on him ever since. What a magnificent fighter and entertainer! It's such a shame he lost to barrera...he wuda been great for the sport. Anyways, I wanted to gauge what you guys thought or hamed RIGHT before the barrera fight...Did you think he was on his way to becoming one of the best ever? Did you think he'd walk over barrera? etc. I wasn't a fan when hamed fought, so I was wondering what ya'll thought of him when he was a superstar.
I thought Naz was a fraud who would get exposed the 1st time he fought a top level guy....and thats what happened. I do miss watching him fight scrubs though cause he was one of a kind and very entertaining.
I wouldn't say he was past his peak he just got to believe his own bull**** too much, a la Tyson V Douglas. The comparison is a valid one actually, you could see the slight decline in Tyson for a few fights before he lost to Douglas and the same can be said for Hamed. If he'd carried on training properly MAYBE he could have beaten Barrera.
Theres no doubt anyone who followed his whole career knows that was a good 2 years past his peak. When they started to try and change his style it was all downhill from there.
Or too many years not fighting anyone world class that would test him and believing that he was the second coming of christ
He won unification fights against other title holders and Barrera and Morales ducked him for years, i think he fought anyone who was willing to fight him. You do realise Hamed was bigger in America than Morales and Barrera at this point right?
Totally disagree, the nerve of some to just write off years of Hameds work on defending his titles, he fought what was around He fought many good figthers and defended his title many times, eventually losing to an ATG in Barrera (no shame in that). So come on don't disregard his previous work; world champ at 21 beating Steve Robinson in his home town. That was simply an awesome performance for a kid. He will not go down as an ATG because he never came back from the Barrera defeat. A fight with Morales would of been a good en an all. Everyone knew Hamed's training regime by then tho. His training was so lax before the Barrera fight and the fights before (the signs were out ala Kelly, Sanchez) i'm suprised he didn't lose before then, tho his natural ability and power got him through. I see him as a v.good fighter with unquestioned ability with sadly failed to become a great fighter, though thats all his fault. He is missed in boxing, Hameds fights were all entertaining.
You are clearly the dumb one or you're weren't around at the time when Naz was telling HBO they wanted Barrera and Morales and they weren't fighting him even Larry Merchant agreed at the time on one of the telecasts for his fights.
There is no way Hahmed would have taken MAB. He was simply outclassed. He feasted on nobodies and has beens and got embarrassed by the first real top teir guy he faced. I firmly believe that both morales and Marquez would have beten him just as bad. It's a shame that he didn't get exposed sooner then we could have avoided topics like this. I'm sure we won't be having this conversation about Amir Khan in ten years.
Nas was defo fading 2-3 fights before the barrera. His peak came early, or was it his commitment that died down?
