Don't believe the hype. Most people thought Hamed would knock Barrera's head into the 27th row, to some extent Barrera included. It wasn't just Hamed's insane power and unbeaten streak, he would clown around to the point where you had to imagine he had a whole new gear if he was pressed hard enough, to where he could buckle down and win conventionally if required. As it turned out the clowning was more the trademark of a genuine clown, and it was an absolute shock to the majority how that fight played out.

all naz's early fights were shown on british tv and it was like watching a featherweight tyson, he'd just smash opponents flying across the ring . awesome power for a little guy.

some on here like to claim he had no chin, even though he was never stopped. he used to spar with the likes of jonny nelson and heavyweights in sparring. can't see amir khan doing that can you ?

Let me add... Most people at the time thought Hamed wasn't human. That's how it really was.

Well what happened to the prince?

Do you think he coulda been one of the greatest if he was trained properly and dedicated himself to training? Or was it just because he was past his prime? Or was he just a hype job?

I wish I got the sense of how people on this board thought of him when RIGHT BEFORE barera...he was prolly on top of the world, nobody could stop him, one of tops p4p etc. Cuz now most either call him a hype job or a joke (i doubt people thought of him that way pre barera)

He wasn't a fraud. He wasn't as good as he believed himself to be either, though.

I still say that he was one of the most talented fighters that I've seen in the ring. He looked his sharpest at bantam, but he also put in a classy display for his first featherweight title.

What happened to Hamed was very simple.

    A) He fell in love with his power, and started looking for 'that one big shot' the further his career progressed. He fought the worst possible fight against Barrera by trying to blow him out with one punch.

    B) Barrera fought the best possible fight against Hamed. Tight guard, constantly circling, boxing off the back foot, refusing to get into a slugging match, nice jabs and sharp counters. He used Hamed's one-dimensional aggression against him perfectly.

    C) Hamed's split with Ingle, the man who had taught him much of that unorthodox style, hurt him far more than it helped him -- Ingle would never have stood for the nonsense that Hamed's new trainer (and Steward) did. He also would have kept Hamed's original style from deteriorating.

    D) He didn't lost to the first good fighter he ever faced. Never let people tell you that. Kevin Kelley, for example, easily qualifies as 'good'. Hamed lost to the first All Time Great that he ever faced -- which, even then, was via points. Barrera is a legend, and there's absolutely no shame in losing to the man.

    E) He had slowed down in comparison to his absolute peak. Watch him against Robinson (or his bantam days) and compare that to his fight with Kelley/Sanchez/Barrera. It's not just due to the step up in class -- you can literally see that his movements aren't as sharp and quick. For a reflex-based fighter such as Hamed, this is naturally a massive problem.

Juan Manuel Marquez was a nobody back then, Hamed wanted Barrera or Morales for years.

hamed did **** it up believing his own hype but to a degree that was what got him so far , there was no one like him and there never will be.
it was a shame he didn't fulfil his prophecy but even his biggest supporters gave a wry smile when barrera kicked his arse and said " he had it coming ".
if your gonna lose, it might as well be by marco antonio barrera , a legend of the sport and as mick jagger said " its better to burn out than fade away ". thats what naz did, he got beat and ****ed it off . he truly thought he would never lose, and when he did he couldn't get his head round it. so he ****ed it off.

Shut up you idiot, look at who Marquez had fought at that time, he didn't deserve a fight with Hamed.

How long have you been watching boxing 3 weeks?
