Nasser calls for IBO ban, says Mundine is untarnished
    BRAD WALTER

    July 25, 2010
ANTHONY MUNDINE'S manager, Khoder Nasser, has called for the IBO to be banned from Australia in the wake of last week's Danny Green-Paul Briggs farce and hit back at critics who have tried to use the fight to discredit the three-time world champion.
Mundine has fought once under the authority of the IBO - the body which sanctioned the Green-Briggs fight - when he won a unanimous points decision over Daniel Geale for the middleweight world title 14 months ago.
He relinquished the belt before January's bout with Rob Medley and Nasser said the Green-Briggs fiasco had underlined why Mundine refused to fight in bouts sanctioned by the IBO.
''We found dealing with them was a sham,'' Nasser said. '' We found them to not be people … with a real interest in the sport. They had no credibility so we didn't want to deal with them and we decided not to have anything more to do with them.''
According to the rules of the major sanctioning bodies, a world champion is required to hold a mandatory title defence against the No.1 contender every 12 months and in other fights can put his belt on the line only against opponents ranked in the organisation's top 15.
The IBO has no such rules, enabling Green to stage a cruiserweight world title bout against an opponent such as Briggs, who had been inactive for almost four years and had not before fought in the division.
The IBO also sanctioned Green's previous title defences against Manny Siaca, who had fought one round - as a middleweight - in the preceding two years, and last December against the then 40-year-old Roy Jones jnr, who had also never fought as a cruiserweight and whose reputation has been tarnished by six losses in his last 11 bouts.
The West Australian had been in the ring himself only once as a cruiserweight before being given a shot at the IBO world title against Julio Cesar Dominguez, an Argentinian also having his second bout in the division and who had won just four of his previous eight fights.
''The IBO basically just do whatever they want to do,'' Nasser said. ''But the IBO is one body that none of the four major bodies - the WBA, WBC, the WBO and the IBF - recognise. Countries like Japan don't allow the IBO to operate. They only allow two sanctioning bodies, the WBA and the WBC. Other countries need to look at a system like that. You shouldn't be able to just create your own organisation and do whatever you like.''
In contrast, Nasser said Mundine had always fought world-ranked opponents who were active in their weight divisions and his last nine bouts had proven to be far from mismatches, with all going the distance.
Mundine won his first WBA super middleweight title against American Antwun Echols in 2003 after German great Sven Ottke paid him step-aside money to avoid a rematch of their 2001 bout so he could fight IBF champion Byron Mitchell.
Ottke was elevated to super champion status after winning that bout and retired before he was again due to fight Mundine as the WBA champion.
Joe Calzaghe later became super champion after beating Mikkel Kessler, but he also denied Mundine a fight by moving to the light heavyweight division and The Man won the vacant WBA super middleweight belt by beating Sam Soliman in 2008.
''What the peddlers of mendacity forget is that if Mundine has never been the real world champion, then neither has Siaca, who beat him, or Kessler, who beat Siaca Nasser said.

'Always fought world ranked opponents' is hilarious!

This is the 'far from mismatches' and remember 'all world ranked' last nine that Nasser is referring to:

(lucky the world rankings extend out to big numbers - it's also handy for competition if you fight blokes in their natural weight divisions not bring them up to yours - and let's face it, they went the distance due to Choc's lack of pop, no other reason)

Unless something changes, the future reads Waters followed by Wood!

...Nasser spare us the bull****, June 30th was just further proof of your circus ring-mastership!

Nasser is right, delete the IBO immediately.

It will only help boxing getting rid of shitty organisations that will eventually lead to one single proper title.
