"I think the scoring should be like, say a guy gets a takedown, it should count for a takedown for sure. What is a takedown in wrestling, two points? In a grappling match it's two points, so he gets a takedown. But if he takes you down and lands in your closed guard and gets punched in the head forty times, is he still ahead on points? If you're on top, you're winning, and I think it's ridiculous. ... There's round-winners and there's fighters. You know, but in order to be a good UFC fighter or cage fighter I guess I've got to learn how to win the rounds. You've got to not fight. That's what I'm saying. You've got to score. Apparently I've got to grab him and hold him, otherwise he'll just grab and hold me. Everybody is like, ‘you need to work on your wrestling. Maybe I don't need to work on my wrestling. Maybe I just need to do the wrestling and not the fighting." http://www.mmamania.com/2011/1/15/1937386/top-game-nate-diaz-is-tired-of-ridiculous-scoring-in-mma I agree with him 100% so tired of seeing fighters fighting for a decision by manipulating the scoring system brb laying on someone for 3 rounds to win on "points"
he makes a solid point this time. nate diaz was on his back in the first round vs dun but he was striking and went for about 5 sub attempts. difficult round to score but no one would score it for nate when i think that is dubious to say the least.
PS - the system does not need to change, you need to have judges who know what they are seeing and score it. its the same in boxing, does someone win the round due to aggression or effective aggression?! it all depends but you need to know what skills you are seeing and you need to see who is coming to do damage and close the show.
Starting to sound a lot like his brother now , this gets more boring and more boring everytime you hear Nick or Nate bang on about it !!!! Im yet to see Nate Diaz effectively beat anybody off his back (barring his submission wins obviously) and get up on his feet without a scratch on his face , the rules and scoring systems are in place , if you are on your back for 3 rounds , then guess what clever dick ............................... youve just lost that fight !!!! Just because Caeser Gracie didnt teach you wrestling dont hold that against people like Guida , Stevenson , Maynard , Edgar , Sherk , Griffin and co , adapt your style , go and learn some wrestling
Nick Diaz said this a couple days ago that i agreed with. "one guy is trying to win rounds, the other guy is trying to win the fight"
Tying to win the fight and finishing the fight are 2 completley different things !!!!! You have to appreciate the arts of the 2 different sports , and the Diaz brothers are just igorant men who think they are the best fighters on the planet , and they are so badly done too and this and that .......... that they actually refuse to beleive that controlling a guy in top position requires skill well guess what Nathan , thats why you keep losing bro Fact is , in wrestling , you wrestle your opponent for control , to control your opponent and not allow him to move offensively against you , well isnt wrestling a part of MMA , and forgive me but if you are looking for submissions but dont actually secure one what have you scored ??? , people talk about damage , what damage does this acheive ??? The only way you can " DAMAGE " an opponent from the bottom is by cuts by utilising elbows !! when did Nate Diaz last do this ??? :huh He is singing his brothers tune and its boring
for the record i felt Kim won the fight 29-28. submission attempts gotta count for something, at least you're TRYING to finish the fight.
i will say one thing - all the "fighting off your back" arguments are strong but flawed by all the examples - Mousasi, both Diaz's etc These are good examples BUT MUCH more can be done off your back. You should be using your hips much more, gravity is not on your side so you need to be putting alot into your shots. You should have a sweep and sub from every position. Defending against strikes and guard passes need to be improved. Wrestling allows you to control where the fight goes and you will naturally be top heavy but BJJ allows you to also control but too few fighters actually control someone like they could. They freeze until they have an opportunity to get up. Sometimes you have to make the opportunity.
the matt serra - matt hughes fight is the prime example. i watched that again the other day and its a ****ing joke serra lost that fight. 1st round serra has hughes wobbling all over the place then gets his back taken which hughes cant do a thing with. serras round 2nd round. lay and pray by hughes. nothing happens. hughes round 3rd round. hughes gets a td and does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except lay on serra for 2/3 of the round. meanwhile serra forces hughes to defend 2 submissions then gets a takedown of his own and still loses the round because hughes was on top longer.. i mean wtf!!??
From a "sports" look at things, MMA officials need to look at things differently, does wrestling attract viewers or detract viewers? I'm not saying ban wrestling just that there is a reason NCAA wrestling and Greco-roman wrestling have no home on television. MMA needs to bring in yellow cards for stalling so the action is at an acceptable pace or else viewership will start lagging and with no viewers there soon becomes no sport. Again not that it will be that extreme but you know what I'm saying. Sales lack when **** gets boring.
