Cleverly seems to be progressing quite well in a Frank Warren kind of way. How do you see him in the future. He had problems with power but now he is getting older and filling out a bit he is getting some KOs. What does the future hold for Nathan Cleverly.:huh
True. I would like to see him push on a bit and get some proven opposition under his belt. I hope Warren doesnt hold him back. The kid has ability and it will be interesting if he is starting to get a bit of power behind him now.
I like Cleverly. Good tools and as you state, crespo, he's improving in an area in which his game needed improving. I think Warren is set on giving him the old school apprenticeship of British, Commonwealth and European which is a proven method of bringing fighters on. We shall see how good he is- I reckon at worst he's got the potential to be a very good European level fighter. LHW is a pretty dead weight on the international stage at the moment so we shall see what will end up happening with him.
If he can fill out as he matures and develop extra power without having to move to Cruiserweight then I think he's a decent prospect. Not world title level but world class/ Euro.
I once saw Cleverley get bashed around the ring by Joey Vegas at SMW and he was lucky not to get knocked down. Seriously lucky. Vegas was able to hit and hurt Cleverley. There was a fight before that too where he was rocked. I don't know if making the weight was a problem for him at the time but I think his chin is a little on the shaky side which is why he's not been in with a puncher yet.
I think Warren needs to start upping the level of who he faces as he is in danger of stagnating. I really think he could do something at light heavy and as has been pointed out there is not much in the way of tallent at light heavy at a domestic level. The boy needs to push on.
Unless mcIntosh improves I can't see him beating Cleverly. Cleverly is the much better boxer at the moment, McIntosh is pretty crude TBH.
I rate him highly. He has good footwork combined with what appears to be a good reportoire of punches but I'd like to see him in a competitive fight. Maybe McIntosh will provide that...
He's up there with any of the prospects technically. The only doubts I have him for him are physically and mentallly. I'm unsure about his punch resistance, durability, and how he reacts in adversity. Mainly because he's not fought any big punchers, or really top fighters in general. He should box the head off McIntosh who mostly trades on handspeed and awkwardness. Clev's got speed, probably more, difference is he has a high output and great variety whereas McIntosh is a lunger.
I'm not too worried by who he has been facing recently even though it has been some very poor opposition. You have to remember he has only had 16 fights and is only 22 so he is inexperienced and I would say he is still physically immature. As long as he is being trained hard and actually prepared for when he is going to have to go 12 rounds against top opposition I am happy with his progress. If he gets past McIntosh I would like to see him against the Aussie Tim Bell, I haven't seen him fight but he is ranked #9 by the WBA and less prominantly at #30 by the WBC so it would give him a nice boost to his rankings. But what I like other then his ranking is that he is experienced but would be a very winable fight for Nathan. After that maybe one last fight at British Level against a winner of title eliminator of Darren Stubbs-Courtney Fry. Then if he gets through those 3 fights comfortably he could take a step up to either European or World Level.
cleverly is a good prospect but doesn't do anything that screams at you, can't really see anything i adore about him in terms of his skills, he's a solid euro level fighter though and might be a late developer i'm cool with his opposition so far. mcintosh's style is a disgrace, he has no fundamentals, just grotesque to watch, he tries to bumb you out with almost every shot, fights of the wrong foot and looks like a kickboxer to me squares up with chin in the air, cleverly should really school him
