Cleverley was special tonight, can't wait until he destroys Yanky frauds Dawson and Cloud, he reminded me so much of Calzaghe.
I want to see how he does in the next step up against Braehmer before declaring him a favorite over Dawson, Cloud and Pascal.
I was impressed with how exciting Cleverly fought, but he should try to fight more measured if he's going to jump into fighting Pascal, Dawson or Cloud (or possibly even shumenov, who's just a bigger puncher than Murat). I do think he's ready for guys like Braehmer, Garay, Erdei and Campillo at this point. But the guy's 6'3". He needs to not give up his height and expose his chin by leaning in. I love his talent, and now I love his chutzpah as well, but he makes some really basic mistakes that are going to need to be corrected for him to beat big punchers at the top tier.
Agree with a lot of this. He does seem to get caught up in the hype and wants to impress, when he does have the skils to box out a decision if required.
i agree. Cleverly looked very solid against the strong Murat. Cleverly should improve his Jab, he could be the next Wlad. :think
I'd favour Clev over Braemher about 60/40 I'd favour Campillo, Erdei, Uzelkov, Cloud, Pascal, Dawson, Shumenov to beat him. I really want to see a fight with Cleverly vs Shumenov, Cloud, or Uzelkov.
Bellew gets hyped to the 9s on this site, mainly I suspect because he posts on the British forum and everyone wants to be his friend. Cleverly > Bellew
Cleverly seems to be getting better and is starting to make real noise now. Most of his early fights were points victories. With a bit of time, he seems to be breaking opponents down over the longer fights. Sometimes fighters start with lots of KO's and then start winning on points as the calibre of the opponents gets better. Cleverly is the reverse of this. Age, size and work rate are on his side. A decent chin and increased punching power plus a tightening of his defence could see him very hard to beat. I was very surprised by how easily he won last night. I thought Murat would have tested him at the very least. I won't be so keen to doubt him next time. Well done! :good
Two things I learnt from last night. I've been underrating Cleverly slightly...whilst overrating Kell Brook immensely. 1 or 2 more bouts maybe defending the Euro Title, and then I'd say he would be ready for a shot at the World Title. His performance reminded me of Calzaghe v Lacey...not as dominating, but the hunger, motivation and workrate...impressive stuff.
Of course hes the real deal. Calzaghe used to spar with him and he was saying the same thing 4 years ago. He will be a LHW champ and Cruiser champ in the future...
I think his defense was actually pretty good, IF he sticks to it and isn't focusing on storming on his opponent. I think he was using his shoulder a lot from what I remember and it was working, he was just getting a bit too carried away. The main priority is to drop his dad from his corner, because he will get brutally knocked out if he keeps following the "keep on exploding on him, son" advice. I can't remember the other bloke who was in the corner but his advice was spot on. Sure, Cleverly will get away with piling the pressure on against a lesser opponent who will wilt, but if he was fighting someone like a Juan Manuel Marquez, he'd be finding it very tough to keep the pressure on a counter puncher for 12 rounds. He needs to box more, it's exciting, but he will get hurt.
