I certainly wouldn't have put a bet on that Cleverly would be the only British ABC champion come the end of the year and I'm pretty sure many other's wouldn't have either. As far as world titles go the Brit's have had a tough year with Khan, Froch, Haye, Murray, Macklin, Hatton, Bellew and Rhodes all losing world titles/title shots. Ricky Burns went undefeated and had an excellent win at the back end of 2011 but dropped his world title to move up in weight. He is an interim champion and should get a shot at a full title next year. So looking ahead, what's the chances of the Brits picking up world title's next year: Amir Khan - should get a rematch with Peterson Carl Froch - may have an easier fight after a run of tough competition, could fight for one of the remaining belts later in the year, especially if Kessler picks up a title. Ricky Burns - looks like Crolla next but could fight for a world title later in the year. David Haye - retired but still mooted to fight Vitali Klitschko in the summer. Darren Barker -was beaten of the no 1 middleweight, put in a good performance so may get his first crack at a title in 2012atsch. Matthew Macklin - possibly up against Martinez next, another fight with Sturm is marketable and it shouldn't be hard to get him a crack at the other titles if need be. Martin Murray - a possible rematch with Sturm? Kevin Mitchell - a big year for Mitchell, he needs to knuckle down and get cracking now, the title picture is messy at lightweight at the minute so could get a shot with some notable departures from the weight. John Murray - put in a good performance against the percieved no2 lightweight but can see them stepping down a level before re-evaluating. Derek Chisora - fighting Klitschko next, a big ask. Kell Brook - should fight for a title in 2012, I don't think they will be looking at Pacquaio or Mayweather so a fight with Senchenko or the Berto/ortiz winner is his best bet.
Reckon we might have to wait till 13 until we have multiple champions. Khan, Clev, Brook, Groves, DeGale, Fury/Chisora*, Quigg, Gavin, BJS. I'd say that's a pretty promising list of young fighters that we can expect to make waves at world level in a couple of years. Add to that Burns, Enzo, M Murray, Froch & Mitchell who all have a reasonable chance of picking up titles if managed correctly. UK is in transition but there are reasons to be optimistic about the future. *Fury/Chisora dependent on the Klits retiring.
Its been a bad year results wise. There have been some decent fights though and Burns has done really well. Its not as though all our fighters went and got starched, they mostly put in good shows and came up short on the score cards. Most of the guys who got a crack at a title will be pushing for another shot next year and I think Khan and Froch will win belts again next year.It isnt as bleak as it looks for British boxing on the world stage.
Meh, I don't even class him as a champion at this point. Scraping past Bellew isn't world champ stuff. Euro level at the moment. It's a bit of a shame he's got that trinket now as I'd love to see a rematch with Bellew but it'd be hard for them to sell it as a world title fight. I'd like to see Froch have one easier fight before jumping back into the deep end. just something where he can show how good he really is and maybe get some confidence back.
Froch stated a while ago he might go up to LH at some point, touting a rematch with Pascal a possibility when he held a belt. I wonder if he'd fancy Cleverly's trinket, Froch vs Cleverly? There might be a fair bit of domestic interest. I can't see Cleverly being allowed to go anywhere near Froch any time soon though.
find it hard to see Cleverly as a champ. Burns might have a belt soon if Marquez retires or stays up in weight, and although he will be a paper champ at the weight the fact that he beat a decent champ in another divison will make him our best champ. Froch should have his chance again (winner of Kessler / Stigletiz) and I am sure Khan will get another shot.
yeah, I can't see him taking that fight. Expecting his next fight to be some Eastern European I've never heard of.
If Cleverly was mixing in the same class as Froch, Khan and even Haye then it would be impressive that he is the last man standing but he isn't. JMM needs to let his intentions be known so we can establish if Burns is the champ or the interim champ which ultimately means nothing.
I hope the BBC finally update their pound for pound rankings to reflect this. 1. Nathan Cleverly 2. Ricky Burns 3. Kell Brook 4. Martin Murray 5. Matthew Hatton 6. Amir Khan 7. Carl Froch
Was saying something along those lines about Clev to a guy earlier on.He never even beat the weak champ he was due to face(not his fault)and he did not look world class last time out.Clev is not on the same level as guys like Khan and Froch title or no title.
