Amateur boxing typically is against stepping in. Even pro-trainers don't like attacking in straight lines. Catching punches is seldom done since its associated with loss of balance. Most prefer slipping.
I guess it depends on the trainer. I think a fighter should learn to do both because they can each be used in different situations to achieve different results. But yes slipping is better for amateur boxing. Your 100% right about that.
99.9% of amateur gyms want a 1,2,3 combo anything more and the conclusion is the fighter isn't a power puncher. No good... Secondly good defense is blocking punches with your hands. If the fighter has to rely on shoulder and elbow blocks, the likelihood is that he lacks reflexes. No good... Almost all trainers wants the punches straight heading upwards, raising the shoulder unto the chin which protects the chin. If the punches are straight and quick its almost impossible to be countered by straight punches. Offense the best defense. Just like the wing chun video.
