Hearns never fought at 154 after Honeyghan beat Curry, never mind welterweight. His first fight in 1987 was at LHW. His last fight at welter was in 1981 against Leonard. How is he going to cut weight to fight Honeyghan at welterweight? At that point you're comparing a welterweight and a middleweight. You might as well talk about Honeyghan cutting weight and beating up Chavez.

The concept of p4p is ability relative to weight. Speculating that Honeyghan would lose against larger fighters like Hearns and McCallum completely misses that point.

Prior to the Vaca fight, the US mags were talking about Honeyghan in terms of p4p best - IIRC correctly a poll had him at #5, so he was well in the argument at the time.

Offensively, he may well have been the best offensive fighter in the world at that point alongside Tyson. He destroyed respected former and future world titlists between 85-88. Rosi went on to hold a title at 154 for the best part of 7 years, but Honeyghan left him snoozing on top of the timekeeper inside of 3 rounds. Hatcher was a tough guy and was flat out within a minute.

As we know with the benefit of hindsight, Honeyghan was a bit of a frontrunner and his prime was brief. However, at his absolute peak he was a beast at welter and a handful for a lot of more celebrated champions in any fantasy match-up.

Generally, I think it's better to play the ball than the man.

It's not so much about getting into a circular argument with a particular poster, but challenging the view that Honeyghan was a one-hit wonder, or that the stars aligned for him against Curry. This is often put out there by a lot of other posters who are actually respected.

 

Owen Moran must have been some Fighter.

 

Nobody mentioned anything here regarding the mythical magazine 'p4p' list (that was in KO magazine at the end of each year (didn't reach TV talk until the 2000s)).
