[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2D0l0N-PC-s&feature=feedrec_grec_index[/ame] I'm sure this has been asked a number of times, but why not? Who've you got, Barry or Naz? Ingle Naz before his head swelled too big, obviously.
Just supplied the first McGuigan vote. Mainly because I couldn't stand Naz and hope Barry could have got lucky on the night and beat him. ....to a pulp.
Thats just Naz being Naz, Barry McGuigan was a fine fighter, very exciting, great work rate, and loved to tear up the body, but he was a front foot fighter that needed that forward momentum to be effective. Naz, although not nearly as elusive as Mr Herol Greaham, was none the less very, very tricky, a heavy hitter, who's power was incressed becuse of his ability to punch from awkward angles. If they met in their prime's, i think Naz would have beaten McGuigan, Barry would have started well but at the same time would be picking up damage as he came in, the Naz uppercut would find the target and by the second half he would be well on top. Barrera showed the way to beat an over confident Hammed, but as good as McGuigan was he just didn't have that style.
A great, back-and-forth tussle. Naz's awkwardness sees McGuigan over exert himself at some point and get sparked. Those who are saying that 'McGuigan was ****' are way off the mark. Even though past prime, Pedroza was never a pushover, and a guaranteed top 10 126lber of all time. Great performance from McGuigan, regardless of it being at Loftus Road (the champ was away from home obviously)
Naz 7-5/8-4 UD. People think to highly on Naz's abilities, but sadly McGuigan wouldn't be quite good enough to beat him.
prime Hamed beats a prime McGuigan. I'd like to see them get it on now though. I reckon McGuigan wins even though he's much older and is conceeding a lot of weight
I love ole Barry, but Hamed would KO him. Barry might make him look bad by putting him under pressure, taking away his thinking time, but Barry would pay a big price for that. If your gonna pressurize a big puncher, you do it from behind the jab, in order to maintain that safe distance. If you start walking in their front door, without the jab, your asking for trouble. You wanna put a puncher on his heels to take away the leverage for his big punches, that's why the jab is important, plus, if you use the jab, you can keep it long, which makes it more difficult for them to counter you, as they need you do come into mid range to counter.
Me neither. He beat a lot of ''former champions'' and ''never been stopped'' guys, but this was in a era of fractured titles where you are considered a failure if you don't win one. At the end of the day, he faced one top class fighter and was soundly whipped. Stylewise, the easiest of the three great Mexicans too for him. Barry's bravery might well prove to be his undoing in this one, but it's definitely a fight he could win.
To be fair though, Naz didn't just win one title. Also, whilst 122lb Barrera seemed the easiest stylistic matchup for him, the Barrera that showed up that night was a different beast. Morales would've given Hamed the best chance IMO.
