"Margo is a great athlete. Its not just his size, its the ability he brings with his size." "Boxing Margarito is a difficult task, because the kid, although he's not multi-dimensional, the dimensions he has, he's mastered. He corrals you. He'll fight you enough just to put you where he wants to put you. And then try to exploit you from that position. What you have to do is try to never give up your position. You can slide but ont try to bounce around and move and run. Because you're just gonna wear yourself out in energy. You're gonna see opportunities to hit this guy but his chin can wear your workout down. You know this guy has a world class chin. And its a part of his weaponry. His chin is a part of his defence." Thoughts? Respect to Naz. He sees Margo much like I do. link to the interview. its a great one. http://www.thering-online.com/video/nazim_richardson_oneoneone_interview/
I agree. People see Margarito as some kind of crude brawler with no method or thought on what he's doing. That's just complete and utter rubbish really. Cutting off the ring, constantly varying your combinations, changing up your angles, throwing to the body throughout the fight, applying intelligent pressure etc are all difficult skills.
Great post. He shortens his punches up really well when he gets inside also. There is method to the madness.
btw remember how Mora beat Forrest, who is considered by some the top 154lb fighter? well i've seen Margarito sparring Mora, and it wasn't even competitive. Not even close to competitive. And Margarito has the kind of style where you expect him to look better in an actual fight than in sparring with the headgear and all that.
That defense is good for now... And it makes for some exciting fights. But it will catch up to him eventually. I know I talk a lot of **** about his fans, but for his sake I hope he isn't permanently damaged when it's all said and done. At the rate he's going he should do about 3-4 good fights, make some bread, and bow out grafecully.
Chavez took hits to the head for over 100 fights and there seems to be no damage. I can't recall one Mexican who has had problems after retiring?
I always said it Margarito has some of the most dangerous short punches I have seen i a while ..I don't know who has as dangerous of a punch at such close range .
I think he has hit the anil on the head. Margo is a freak of nature, he can take major shots and brush them off. They should call him the Heartbreaker. Saying that I he can be out boxed and out manouvered,I would ipck a fresh Floyd to beat him and if Cotto can stay out of the trenches he can grab a win in the rematch imo, but he MUST stay out of the trenches!
Scored it a draw against a 1 handed Clottey. Lost to Santos and scored it widely for Williams. He's average who makes up for it in his size.
I had Margarito winning the Santos fight, and needless to say, I had Margarito beating Clottey. Don't know what your scorecard is all about.
1st: Close Clottey 2nd: Clottey 3rd: Clottey 4th: Clottey 5th: Margarito 6th: Margarito 7th: Margarito 8th: Close Clottey 9th: Wide Margarito 10th: Close Clottey 11: Margarito 12: Margarito The 1st, 8th, and 10th could have been scored for Margarito or even, but Clottey seemed to land the cleaner more effective blows opposed to Margaritos outstanding workrate. Scored that about a month ago.
In any event, you sold Margarito short in your last post. Margarito didn't do a demolition job on Cotto with size alone, he used educated pressure, and shortened his punches up to land subtle uppercuts. He also tucked his elbows in tightly to negate Cotto's body attack. Subtle work from Margarito.
