NBC Boxing: Thabiso Mchunu vs. Garrett Wilson RBR

On paper this might seem like a showcase mismatch, but is actually pretty compelling. Mchunu is still yet to quite prove himself the real deal after upsetting a drained Chambers (and then looking good beating a fellow African of dubious quality on the world stage in Durodola) and while he so far looks very slick and skilled he is small for the weight and does have that domestic level KO defeat.

Wilson meanwhile is better than his record, durable and dangerous - kind of a Cruiser version of Derrick Findley or Darnell Boone. (except not quite as good as either p4p)

 

Round 1

Mchunu is sniping from the outside while circling to his left, scoring with right jabs up top and left crosses on the body. Wilson stalks carefully, not wasting punches and keeping his guard up. A few heavy roundhouse swings on the body from Wilson, and hooking rights and lefts at the head as Mchunu navigates the corners. Mchunu lands a left hand lead and puts a right hook behind it and wobbles his challenger back toward a corner, sealing the round.

Round 2

Mchunu is circling to his left and putting out quick southpaw jabs as Wilson steps to him. Wilson is leaving his gloves down below his chest as he wades inside and hoisting them up when Mchunu starts flurrying. Wilson's timing is a bit off as Mchunu is scoring multiple times on him with both hands throwing blazing straights before the guard is fully up, and then propelling himself backwards off the balls of his feet. Mchunu starts to light Wilson up darting in and out with right hooks and straight lefts. Wilson is stunned again late. Mchunu comes in and zaps him several times unanswered.
