Maybe it was a case of having lowered expectations going into the fights. White Wolf has obviously seen better days, but Jennings looked better than expected against someone who was shopworn but determined to hang in there. He stood in front of Sergei and repeatedly beat him to the punch, and was able to string together four and five punch combos on a pretty consistent basis. Plus the tempo of the fight, in general, was faster than what we've come to expect of the HW's. As for the other heavyweight contest, it was a bit more eventful than expected, with Nagy rocking Ademeck on a couple of occasions, and TA returning the favor from time to time. Also fought at a pace that was probably as good as we were going to expect, given Nagy's limitations. As for Judah-Paris...Yeah, it was a beat-down, but an aesthetically pleasing one, given how accurate Zab was during the fight. It was one of those fights that repeatedly elicits "oohs" and "aahs" from those who watch it. So it was still fairly entertaining in a somewhat sadistic sort of way. It could have been a lot worse, methinks...And that's probably why people are giving it such good reviews.
ESPN cards look like complete garbage when compared to these NBC cards. The only reason I watch the espn card is out of sheer desperation for boxing. There simply isn't enough to watch out there. Good job NBC.
Fair points. Having weighed all the evidence, I just have zero regrets for having stuck with HBO as my primary source of live entertainment.
You do realize that different organizations are working with different budgets, right? ESPN is obviously a big company but they don't allocate much funding to their boxing programming, I think. Are Solo Boxeo, Golden Boy's Fight Night Club, Boxeo Telemundo, Box De Primera, etc not worth watching because of their relatively low production value? :huh I certainly find them entertaining enough on a frequent basis.
Par for the course. They always ebb & flow. People always seem to put on rose tinted glasses in hindsight. "Oh man, last season of FNF was freaking KILLER!!!" - remembering only the epic nights and conveniently forgetting the many, many duds.
IButt, we both know you would try to stop street fights and hand out boxing gloves and do a RBR if possible. FNC is alright, actually its pretty good sometimes. Boxeo Telemundo and Box De Primera are for hardcore boxing people, the general non-spanish speaker won't watch either. ........ But over all so far so good. Hopefully they can get a "big" fight on there like a Austin Trout-K9 Unification. Isn't like either guy is used to big money yet.
Agreed. Good fights! Glad to see Judah looking like he has more left in the tank. Of course, one can say that's because Paris didn't fight back much. I saw Judah take the fight away from him personally. This is judah's last hurrah, he's made the best of it so far. If Timmy loses to Pac, and returns to 140, Judah's a viable contender. There are alot of good fights that can be made at 140. Judah is certainly in the mix.
Exactly. WHat these lower tier networks can do is pick up the format used by BAD or shobox and take the up and comers that need the exposure and are not yet high purse fighters yet.
I feel you IB, I thought relative to the HW fights that I've seen over the last few years these were good fights. I disagree about the "slow plodding" part. I thought Jennings moved really well and demonstrated good speed for a big guy. Also I thought Adamek moved fairly well and his hands looked quick as well, for HW's. In defeat I thought Nagy looked pretty decent too...I mean to each their own, I just thought it was a fun card and guys were busting their ass to win and it showed. Not trying to say it was The Thrilla in Manilla just saying for their niche and place, it was a good, fun card.
