In round 11 Ncita hurt Mckinney and Mckinney turned his back and walked away. How was that bout not stopped? When an opponent turns his back and walks away he quits and is suppose to lose is he not?
All I'm reminded of is Alexis Arguello's commentary on that DVD. "HE TURNED DA BACK ON ME! I KNOCKED DA GUY OUT!" It seems like one of those rules akin to "The ropes holding a fighter up". It's the refs discretion I guess.
...........I love Arguello, but he's wrong about Ray turning his back on him. He never did that. Mancini took that right hand, fell to one knee, and quickly bounced back up, all within a split second. Still wobbly, his forward momentum (remember, he was walking into that punch) carried him on, and he merely stumbled forward into the ropes. First off, he was entitled the eight-count; second, Arriba is right, it's a discretionary call for the referee. Intent means a lot here. Mancini was clearly not giving up or pulling a "no mas." The same could be said of McKinney.
Mckinney got hit turned his back on Nicta and walked 2/3 steps to a corner.Fight should have been over.
.............Here's the sequence (great fight too, for those who haven't seen it). You'll see that McKinney takes the punch and is clearly hurt. He turns his back, walks out of punching range, and takes a knee. I don't see the problem with it. Lot's of fighters take a knee to escape a follow-up barrage. [YT]JYECYPrXj1A[/YT]
It is smart to take a knee but Mkinney strolled to the corner and only went down because there was no place to go-he was in the corner. You can't turn your back and walk away like that.He didn't take a knee he was trying to get out of the way of Nicta's attack. Was a great fight though.I felt so sorry for Nicta at the time. The rematch was an interesting fight as well.
It's just hilarious to me because Arguello's accent plus his generally shocked demeanor about reciting an incident from 10 years prior is priceless. Mancini most certainly was not "turning his back" on Arguello. He got caught with a big punch and as you said, was just carried forward by momentum. The round was pretty close to being over as well...so it's not like he had an opportunity to just walk out, his momentum + the round being over pretty much predicated what happened there. I think Arguello was just "caught in the moment"...a moment he still believes he was jobbed in
From that clip it looks similar to when a fighter takes a bad body shot and spins out of control. He got nailed...had sort of a delay, turned around and took a knee sort of kind of. I have a hard time believing McKinney wanted out..but as you state, it's entirely possible that the ref could've called it. Is that a young Steve Smoger there btw?
I think the diffence is Mancini got caught with a huge punch which changed his direction but Mckinney got caught by a big punch then turned his back-the punch didn't cause Mckinney to turn his back-Mckinney chose to turn his back.
