Mike Donovan calls O'Baldwin "the greatest fighter and athlete I ever knew" in page 75 of his biography, and said that he thought the only other boxer who can beat Tom Allen outside of Mace was O'Baldwin. When a journalist asked Donovan how he thought a match between Sullivan and O'Baldwin would've gone after the Mitchell fight, Donovan responded; "Wouldn't it look very funny to you if you saw Ned O'Baldwin lying there in bed, being fanned three quarters of an hour after the bout with a little fellow like Mitchell?''
