I am getting the impression that you don’t think Pryor was very good, but I feel you are being a little vague...how do you really feel about him?

Each and every year The Arguello vs Pryor fight becomes more about conspiracy theories, magical black bottles, and now Pryor using Peds's and Arguello way beyond prime.(He wasn't) etc. By the Arguello fans( And I'm one by the way) Please.....Lets stop devaluing Pryors victory with the nonsense. Arguello was the favorite going in (rightfully so) but that was only because no one up to that point had seen Pryor fight a disciplined fight. Because of his prior knock downs and the sheer recklessness of his fighting style everyone assumed he would be an easy win for the precise punching and power of Arguello. Pryor was vastly underrated before Arguello. What Pryor showed during that fight was his skill level along with the aggression. His ability to change tactics after his initial blitzkrieg failed to deter Arguello, and resulted in him getting blasted a few times he was able to adopt to the situation and fight from angles lessening the power punching he was taking, and fighting from angles also turned out to be the difference in the fight his ability to stay off center from Arguello. It wan't a fluke, esp when considering Pryor stopped Arguello even earlier in the 2nd fight, and then Arguello went on to stop B.Costello for the Jr.Welterweight title. Pryor deserves to be considered in the running for top 3-5 Jr.welters in history, if not the G.O.A.T at that weight. No fighter at jr welter I've seen would've been a prohibitive favorite over him at that weight.

TBF I am an appreciator of both guys, and think this fight is a historic monument to both of them!

However Panama is a piece of crap as a human, and by Pryor aligning himself with him and going along with “the plan”, he has opened himself up to whatever scrutiny comes his way. To me they both gave heroic performances... but no matter how we spin it Pryor and co chose to bend/break rules, and whatever subjective hypothesis this leads to stems from him allowing himself to be put in this position. No one to blame but himself.

But again I don’t denigrate his performance based upon this, and both fights and fighters are among my most enjoyable!

This is one if the few boards where I have ever seen him rated so highly.....he was a good fighter but not in the running for top JWW fighter he is lucky to mentioned in the same breath as Ricky Hatton but Ricky beat better fighters sans Arguello and then we know Arguello was at the end.....I love the Pryor-Arguello fights they are full of drama but the fact that #1 was so competitive when he was the bigger man defending against a smaller man moving up to his 4th weight class shows how overrated he was to begin with.....the fact is he is overrated by casual fans who read the articles building him up for profit....not so much by the fighters of the time or hardcore fans....

I do not hate Pryor I enjoy his fights but I am a realist on his career, I know he had a lot of fight offers he refused with other fighters or managerial problems.....case in point on his managements teams lack of confidence in him passing tests against prime fighters in his weight class...they refused fights with Duran, SRL, and later Rosario, Bramble and others if I remember right they were waiting for a big money fight and would not risk him on any threat that could derail him.....boxing 101 when bringing a fighter along, marketing, good matchmaking that highlights him, avoid threats, sell your career to the highest bidder. Loma for example is the real deal out of the gate he has been matched with every top fighter willing, Mancini was matched carefully or protected, Hagler matched against anyone who would fight, Cooney carefully matched against sure wins and old fighters with names, Tyson matched against anyone who would fight, SRL matched tough, JCC followed the typical Mexican fighter path but once he hit world class it tough matching, Camacho matched tough early, Morrison matched carefully until they could not avoid the dangerous fighters and the money was their the quality of the fighter is seen in their matching if they have a good team

Pryor was carefully matched his opponents make that obvious the alleged ducking was Pryor and his team and no one else ducking. They had chances to fight Duran for $750,000 and they said no...beat Duran and you are the man....SRL and his team offered him $500,000 he turned it down they raised it to $750,000 he said no both offers were more money than he had made in his entire life, no fighter offered a chance of a lifetime to skyrocket to the top of the money picture turns it down....preparation meets opportunity!....unless they doubt he could succeed so they built his brand up and was offered the Arguello fight....suddenly he was interested in it for over a million...hmmmmm, I specifically remember how excited Mancini and his team were to fight Pryor because his chin was their to hit they felt....then he lost to Bramble x 2, once Pryor started increasing his value fighters wanted to fight him and no one was afraid...according to Pryor he was the scariest most feared fighter in history....marketing 101 if no one is interested you attack their manhood and create noise...maybe you get a fight the UFC does this all the time.

I certainly never alluded that he could beat Duran or SRL Rich. Arguello is quite a big win tho. To me anyway and i am with Unforgiven in thinking him overrated.
