Have a nagging sore ankle that I can't shake with rest, ice, stretching 'n every pro brace on the market. Back in-the-day, would go to an orthopedic specialist 'n get a cortisone shot. I'd be 100% the next day. Not possible anymore. Any suggestions?
How long has it been hurt? And how long are you planning on resting it? If you've had prior ankle injuries you may need to rest longer than most people. Those things don't heal in days, sometimes not even in a few weeks, it really depends on the severity of the injury. For some, chronic ankle problems end up being career enders. So I'd be cautious if I were you. Hope you get better soon.
Take a week or two to make sure its fully fit and make sure your wearing proper footwear. And get fit soon kid.
'bout two weeks, v. Guess I'm too impatient. Competing in sports is in my rear-view mirror. Will settle for daily walking.
Braces, shots and things like that can make it worse. Rest it and when you can do some proprioceptive training, buy a wobble board. Use it as often as you can, your balance will be better and I'd bet that you won't have ankle problems anymore.
Just lay off of it for a bit. Try soaking it in some warm water epsom salt and keeping it elevated. Also you could gently massage it and rotate it.
The wobble board's an intriguing idea, l. Nobody's mentioned it before. Look forward to tryin' it. Letya know if it helps.
i've had a dodgy ankle since a motor bike accident in 2000.i had an avulsion fracture and damaged ligaments.i can go for months with nothing and then start tripping over for no apparent reason including last night with a few beers inside me and at work stone cold sober.i used to fall over when i was running too.cocktail stick ankles don't help either
cortizone looses its benefits over time is only a short term fix. Just bit the bullet and get it looked at by someone in the know. Obviously rest is not doing the job. Think long term
Back in the day, d, overdid marathon training and got plantar fasciitis 'n a strained achilles in my left foot -- so bad, couldn't put any weight on it; 'n no matter what anti-inflammatories, rest, or therapies I tried for MONTHS, It wouldn't respond. Finally, went to a sports medicine doctor highly recommended by other runners. He gave me two injections of cortisone (with a needle that musta been for a horse ), one in my arch, the other in the Achilles -- the pain was like bein' stabbed in a nerve, without novocaine. Had to rest it for a day, but was PAIN FREE the next day -- It was amazing. Felt so good, went back to training -- careful not to push it. Never been troubled since. But, with all the cautions 'bout Cortisone, didn't wanna make it my go-to for similar injuries...but I'm sorely tempted now. But, with the medical system bein' what it is today, it's not an in-n-out procedure at the doctor's office. No sports medicine doc will prescribe it. They lean toward anti-inflammatories, exercise 'n stretching -- useless for me.
I've had those same injuries and ligament damage on the other foot. Once I started using a wobble board never had any problems again. Most people think that with an injury you just rest and it takes care of itself, that's only half of it. You need to strengthen it ideally to stronger than it was at the time of the injury. The reason for most ankle injuries is proprioceptive issues, the feedback from your body isn't what it should be to protect you. Nobody has dodgy ankles, just ankles that have been neglected
