Need advice from those in the know

    Bare with me people whilst I inform you of the situation. I've been a massive fan of boxing for years but have never actually boxed myself as I decided at a young age to put my football (soccer) first as it was something I was quite talented at. Needless to say I regret that decision at times but it is something I will live with.

    The football never worked out the way I wanted it to and despite still playing in the odd kick about I haven't actual played for a team in over a year. (This would be the right time to mention that when I did play I was never too keen on the fitness aspect of training and instead preferred ball work).

    Anyhow basically my levels of cardio respiratory endurance are pretty poor and my diet is shite as well as other things.

    At 17 I still feel I could learn the basics of boxing but before going down to the local boxing club I want to get in reasonable shape so I don't make an arse of it and quit too early or whatnot.

    The stats:

    Age: 17
    Weight: About 9 stone 2 pounds (As you can see from the pic below I am reasonable skinny) but I have found that I now have a gut which I am bitterly disappointed at. This HAS to go

    I am currently ten quid in the red as I have spent all my wage so the Gym is a no no this month. (I was a member previously but had to quit due to exams and other matters. This shall not be the case however in the future)

    Schedule: I go to school Mon to Fri from 9am to 4pm. (Get out at 1 on a Thursday). I also work on average 2nights a week (Wed+Thur) 5pm to 10pm and also a Saturday from 2pm until 10pm.

    Equipment: Right now I am limited to the following weights.

    I can also stick the iPod in and go running which I plan to do and I'll be going swimming regularly when I have the funds. Sit ups, squats, etc are all good also, however press ups are a no no. One of my shoulders is that bad and has been since I was a kid (although it has no effect on me whatsoever apart from this exercise) that if I try to do weights at the gym upwards lying down or press ups the muscles tightens up and just collapses. According to one of the guys down the gym it was like what someone would have when they were just starting pyschio for shoulder problems and they recommended I do stretches to loosen it. Something I am currently looking in to.

    So in regards to my limited equipment and schedule is there any sort of training programme you could recommend for me to get kickstarted.


    I've changed the diet and I am doing my best to keep it like the following:

    Breakfast: Cereal and fresh orange juice
    Lunch: Sandwhich, Banana, Apple and bottle of Water
    Dinner: Potatoes and Meat/Fish

    Thats on a good day.

    I am guily of drinking a **** load of Lucozade (Orginal and Orange). Is this particularly bad?

    I've rambled on long enough. I'll answer any other questions and those that have took the time to read this and are willing to help out it is hugely appreciated. Basically I'm looking for a rough guid to bulking up and improving my cardio.

    Depends really. If you want to be just a boxer( simply know how to fight) then your ok but if you plan on becoming world champion your gonna need A LOT more that just jogging with the Ipod. Trust me, I have world class talent(many famous fighters and coaches made this remark) but it isnt good for **** if I dont work my ass of.

    I'm not interested in becoming the next Holyfield. I'm realistic in that I wish to improve my cardio and then head to boxing and just learn how to box and perhaps participate in a few amateur bouts.

    I'm looking for information though regarding which would be the best training to do. I don't just want to go running every now and again without any direction, time, etc.

    join a gym! if your shoulder is too bad for press ups then maybe you shouldn't box. However running is really good to get into shape, but joining the gym and sparring is really good.

    From your background of playing soccer you should have learned what to eat and how to get in shape. If not, then I suspect you weren't paying much attention. You had better get your mind on what you are doing because boxing is much more dangerous than soccer. I don't know what the boxing facilities are like in your area. These days a guy has to just take what is available, good or bad. There are lots of books and videos to help you along. If you have talent it will soon become apparent.

    Joining a gym and getting a trainer is essential. You could do some roadwork to get in shape, but there is absolutely no substitute for sparring or advice on your technique. You could pick up bad habits if you start on your own.
