There is a gentlemen the comes into my place of work, he's 83 and was originally from Scotland. He himself boxed in the Navy as a young man, but he has given me a treasure chest of boxing memorabilia from the 1920's that were his fathers. Two things in particular stand out to me and I was wondering if anyone could give me more insight into these things and what they may be worth. First is a small magazine about 8"×6". It says "Health and strength" 12 Burliegh st London. There seems to be a written date of 1920, but there are other dates in it that are confusing ke. The cover is "The life and fights of Packey McFarland one of America's greatest light-weight boxers Full record of all his fights, with slecial details and incidents never before published. 1D" I havent looked to much into it because while its in very good condition it also seems very brittle and I dont want to ruin it. The second magazine is the same size and appears from the same time though I can be sure because I havent found a date on it yet. Its called "BOXING or the art of self-defence 3D With illustrations Giving useful hints to amateurs and professionals." While i cant find a date it does say "Published by the Daisy bank printing and publishing company. Wellington st Gorton, Manchester. Telephone 696 Openshaw. Can anyone tell be what I have here or direct me to some who would know?
That booklet published by the Daisy Bank Printing was published in 1905. Health & Strength was a London based outfit and they published a whole series of those little individual booklets in 1909 including the following that I'm aware of: The Life and Fights of James J. Jeffries The Life and Fights of Jem Mace The Life & Battles of Jas. J. Corbett The Life and Fights of John L. Sullivan The Fighting Life of Jimmy Britt The Life & Contests of Battling Nelson Full and Graphic Story of the Great Fight - Burns vs. Johnson The Life and Battles of Charlie Mitchell The Life and Battles of Gunner James Moir The Life and Battles of Freddie Welsh - Part I The Life and Battles of Freddie Welsh - Part II The Life and Battles of Jimmy Driscoll The Fighting Career of Owen Moran The Life and Fights of Robert Fitzsimmons The Life and Fights of Tommy Burns Life and Fights of Jack Johnson The Life & Battles of Sam Langford The Life and Fights of Iron Hague The Life and Fights of Packy McFarland The Life & Fights of Bombardier Billy Wells Clay prizefightingbooks.com
Thanks Clay. Many of those other books are shown on a list in this one. And there is a 1909 date on the back of it. My confusion came as it gives McFarlands record at that time and it stops at 1910. Cant say I know anything about publishing and edoting at that time, but could it have been published than re-edited and released again a year or so later? While Ive read many articles and such from that period I have never had an actual copy.
I have no contribution, other than to say it's amazing that you have acquired these antique memorabilia items from the gentleman, and that he held on to them so long. Unfortunately thing like that usually get thrown away along the way. :good
He told me I could have them, but I told him no. He said I could hold on to them as long as I'd like. Most of the stuff is about his father who fought amateur fights over much of Europe and a decorated fighter for his time. One of the things I found very interesting was a photo of his dad. I get a kick out of young fans today talking about nutrition and aports science today. This man was a specimen from the picture taken. No chance of photoshop. He's also told me he had much more stuff but believes one of his nephews took it years ago and said he would ask him about it. Still, it is amazing to come across something like this from so long ago. When I get more time I will give details about his dad and maybe guys more adapt at this kind of research can find something else. As a fan of boxing history Im finding this very exciting. Im also thinking of photo copying the books so others can read it here if there is a way for me to upload it.
"but could it have been published than re-edited and released again a year or so later?" Possibly. Wait, I just pulled out Hartley's Boxing Bibliography and it says the McFarland booklet was published in 1910. It's the only one of the series I see listed as being published in that year as opposed to 1909 by Harley. I have some other listed for sale in the softcover section of my website.
Nah, this is one of the nicest and coolest men you could ever meet. Plus he comes into the restaurant I manage 3 or 4 times a week. That would just be bad business.
I will pay you 1 thousand V-dollars to acquire the two items you speak of :deal just kidding, cool story :good
