Have a physics final project. For my thesis it is basically why Roberto Duran is the best boxer ever from a physics perspective. If anyone can help me tie together Roberto Duran and physics it would be much appreciated.

This might be tricky. How much do you know about Roberto Duran in terms of scientific testing?

It doesnt need to be that complicated. For example I could talk about his power punching in terms of leverage and force and that would work. But it needs to be 7 pages long and I need a presentation. I could get quite a ***** on the physics of his punching power but I was wondering what other areas of his fighting I could apply physics to.

    Defense. Slipping punches. Training methods.

Just ideas of course. Good luck.

I gave a presentation last semester about the effects of boxing on the brain. It's fun to research stuff you like.

    Cool!

Any findings on how very minor brain damage (tiny bleeds and stuff) might affect a fighter's punch resistance?

O yea definitely. Especially about how rolling with punches takes away force etc. Thanks, any more suggestions would be great from anyone. I've got plenty of time so if you think of something just post it on whenever.

Get a different study subject. Boxing isn't rational and if formulas could be easily applied then we wouldn't have had 100 years of betting on it including the computer age.

It's too complex to apply some basic formulas. You could say that from looking at the Kinetic Energy formula, energy increases quadratically with speed but only linear with mass, so according to that, if a 120lbs'er punches twice as fast as a 240lbs'er, they should punch just as hard. We all know that's bull****. There's a clear contradiction because a mere punch is just too complex.

You would think durability increases linearily with mass but again that is not true. The mere step from 175lbs to 190lbs+ (just a little over 10%) leads to a gigantic increase in loss of durability (just look at Foster or Spinks), much more so than just 10%.

Save yourself a lot of trouble. Get a more easy subject.

Agreed, and what Duran did well was suttle. He wasn't the fastest, the strongest or the hardest hitting.

It depends how conclusive the study is, is it just a highschool project?

My advice - just write 7 pages on how great Roberto Duran is, forget the physics. You'll probably end up with the same mark (Fail) as you would if you try to clumsily disguise it as a physics paper.
My way you dont stress as much, you get to write exactly what you're interested in, and you flunk school in a fittingly nonchalant and flamboyant manner. It worked for me, anyway.

I didn't find any research specific to that. The AMA has done a lot of research though, as have the Journal of Neuroscience, British Medical Journal, etc.

What I did find is that there may be a genetic component for pugilistica dementia, which I did not know.

    It was fun.

you must employ the principles of kinetic energy, momentum and elastic collisions between the fist and the head. You might explain that Duran had the perfect stance to generate his power then go from there with more esoteric information like how Duran could snap his punches for maximum effect and tie that in with the above principles. What do I know, I'm only a rooster.
