Hi guys, I need help with throwing an uppercut. It's not like I don't know how, but it's just that my uppercuts NEVER land on my opponent's face (or chin, you know what I mean). Of course, this is all just sparring because I'm only a beginner. It's always blocked by elbow, glove, or whatever. Is there something wrong with my technique or is it about timing? I have no problem with all other punches like cross, hook, jab, but the uppercut is the only one that never hits the target. Thanks,
unless you can perfectly set it up dont think of it as a super knockout punch think of it as a quick way to score a point... dont charge it up or anything just pop it out and up as fast as you can if nothing else it disrupts there vision temporarily if it hits
An uppercut is a deceptively hard punch to land for newbies. It looks so easy when others do it, but so many newbies (and some not-so newbies) throw it wrong. It might be humbling to admit your form may be responsible, but it's a good start. A common problem is with the uppercut not being thrown as vertically as possible, but instead diagonal - like a hook. This might be my guess - without actually seeing you do it. Uppercuts are meant to slip between the arms of the opponent's guard from close range. Think about it, if your opponents arms are like this ||, a punch must travel straight up between the lines. Anything else, will catch the elbows/forearms. That's just one idea. With an uppercut, there are many different ways it can be thrown incorrectly, that the problem could also have to do with wrong distance, timing or throwing it at innappropriate times.
The uppercut is more of a FINISH HIM shot. It's what you throw when they give it to you. Tough to land just because you want to. One of those things you have to open up and just see the opening for it. It also doesn't have to land clean. Turn it sideways and try to just barely clip them with your pinky knuckle. Throw one at their forehead if they're leaning over. Turn it toward you and try to catch them in the eye socket with the pointer knuckle of your lead hand. Mix them up to the body as well, because they will give you openings to land it upstairs (tough to see if it's going upstairs or down). Bang them on the sides of the body and head and sneak it in there. Make sure you put your shoulder into it. Your uppercut shoulder should be pointing right at them as it lands--don't just throw it squared up.
Speechless: maybe I'm too mechanic, just do it the basic way, which is vertical, so I guess you're right, I should try some diagonal uppercut KillSomething: finishing blow? I guess I should try that too, but the timing is just SOOOOO damn hard just to throw a normal uppercut lol; besides, I use uppercut most of the times to break the defense like "the smash" (extremely effective, in my case). Other than to break, I'll try to use some combinations to make an open for my uppercut
Uppercut was the last punch i got super comfortable with... now i use it as a set up for the hook or a bait mechanism
