The only boxing gym that I am able to go to is a MMA/ Muay Thai Gym. They have two boxing coaches and one of the coaches recently won the Chicago golden gloves. The problem is that the hours are funky for the boxing classes. They only teach boxing on Monday and Wednesdays, I´m getting a job soon and my hours might effect how often I could go to it. They have Muay Thai classes pretty much every day and open gym on Tuesdays and MMA training on Thursdays. Should I just go to the muay thai and the MMA classes too even though all I want to do is Box in the amateurs?
NOPE, that will change all your movements, reactions, your guard and lets be honest: Muay thai punches are weak and wide open as f**k as they get focus on kicks, knees and elbows. If you want to do boxing find another place or someone who can teach you, if you want to try muay thai or MMA then do it but to DO muay thai or MMA, or else it will be akward for you and your gym mates.
That´s the problem though, there are no other gyms close in my area so I would be stuck with this one.
He is right though. Boxing may not be in the cards for you right now but that doesn't mean you can't learn some fight experience through MMA or Muay Thai. Just realize that your not gonna be able to compete with a boxer in striking using those skills. Same as me trying to jump in there and try to do some Judo on someone whose had 20 MMA fights.. probably not gonna work in my favor since I don't train groundwork, I train footwork.
I went to classes last night and I can definitely see how training in Muay thai would throw me off while boxing. The stance, defense, and even the Blocking is completely different. I´ll just stick with the boxing training.
That's cause Muay Thai doesn't really have a 'defense' other than to parry or back up, they are about just straight up kicking the crap outta each other. However, when I fought someone who was prior Muay Thai, he left his guard open all the time right down the middle cause their stance is squared off.
