hello to everyone on this forum im new to the site and need some advice... I went in the ring and sparred for the first time recently and got hit too many times and was wondering is there anything i can do to add to my training to help me practice getting sharper and dodge punches better?? thanks in advance:good
You should have been taught how to avoid getting hit BEFORE you started sparring. Sounds like you need a new coach.
Try this - get an old speedbag, a small one, fill it with sand, hang it at face height from a tall beam. Get in your stance, push the bag away from you, and practice slipping the bag as it swings back towards you. Use minimal movement and don't move until the bag is close to you - the bag should brush the top or the side of your head. If it misses you by a foot you're moving too much. Learn to anticipate as the bag swings back towards the back of your head and slip it again. Like the man said, keep your hands up. Good luck.
This is a good drill. Here's a video of someone at my gym doing it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLjm4SM5HM4 Later, Bob Barnum http://www/PittsburghBoxing.com
First thing first, you have to understand no matter how good you defence is in boxing your always going to get hit, your going to have to take punches in order to give punches. As for as training you can do. Some drills or excersises you can do is duck rope, double end bag, some flow drills and defensive drills with a partner, and just lots of sparring. Make sure you tell your coach that you want to focus of defence too. Good luck.
very simple: sparring is just way too early for you. get your technique, stamina and tactics happen. this is gonna take about a year
sparring is the best but you want to learn whilelimiting the amount of times you get hit in the head, obviously its not healthy. I like to do partner work, where another boxer and i take turns throwing set combos at each other, slow at first and as we get the hang of it we build up speed, then we take turns throwign any three punches we want at each other and defending, you have to do it with someone who can pull their power, so you are learning to dodge and block but if you get hit it will not hurt you too much
