Barney Ross,a great fighter, and a great war hero,Guadacanal, is reputed to have never been dropped,in 81 bouts, fighting in a very tough era also...
i always think hagler never took a count.that punch off roldan that dropped him should have been ruled a foul.
Winky got dropped 5 times in his WBA 154 title fight with Julio Cesar Vazquez back in '94. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z0Mg-dw16o[/ame]
:rofl I watched this fight yesterday and just wanted to post something in the scorecard thread. Very entertaining fight. Winky looked very good but totally different to how he fought later on. Very slick and with more power. Something I liked about the fight, everyime Winky seem to get he better of Vasquez, Vasquez came back the next round and knocked him down. Both slipped, Vasquez once and Winky two times.
That Chuvalo thing is a bone of contention with some, but I believe, from looking at their fight vid that George was indeed put on the deck from a punch by Bonavena. The other trip George made to the canvas in that fight was a slip, but the other was a legit knockdown..maybe the ref was out of position to have seen it, but it happened.
Scar Tissue ,Barney Ross fought the heavier Ceferino Garcia twice, never was floored by Garcia, and winning two decisions over Garcia...and in the second fight Ross fought with a damaged right hand also..Ceferino always claimed that Ross was "the toughest guy I ever fought"...
your right, I got him confused with Dee Collier...I used to be able to shoot from the hip but these days I got to double check
It is Freaky because Bonavena an awkward puncher was not a killer puncher and Chuvalo was in with Foreman,Frazier, etc. and was not put down but in the same respect he dropped and stopped Quarry who Frazier,Shavers,Foster,Lyle could not deck. Boxing is a funny business
Yes, it's freaky allright..Bonavenas very strength and awkwardness and lack of any defineable rhythm may have been the difference. And as for Chuvalo-Quarry, that's still one of the most inexplicable things...of all people, Chuvalo would be the one to score an actual "ko" over Quarry.
