probably not a bad idea - Byrd will be more likely to throw combinations from the outside and keep moving away
Byrd is a very good defensive fighter. Watch his fight vs Ike Ibeaubuchi for reference. Even in defeat, he was extremely hard to hit, and very frustrating. The fight against Tua is probably a better example as well. Uses a lot of head movement, and unorthadox defensive technique like bending at the hips and sitting against the ropes. The only thing I really see getting to Byrd here is age or carelessness. I think Povetkin will outwork him though.
I think age could be a factor in this one. I wonder if all the punishment he has taken will start to catch up on Byrd. Povetkin will stop him IMO.
Alexander Povetkin - Points(i was hoping everyone here would pick byrd) Steve Molitor - stoppage joker Martin Castillo - stoppage Sebastian Sylvester - stoppage Giovanni Segura -stoppage
Alexander Povetkin - Stoppage Steve Molitor - Stoppage Martin Castillo - Stoppage - Joker Sebastian Sylvester - Stoppage Giovanni Segura - Stoppage
Everyone has made virtually the same picks, so it will come down to how the matches end (Ud or KO) more then anything. Going to be a tight round for sure.
Chris Byrd - Points *Joker* Molitor - Points Martin Castillo - Stoppage Sylvester - Stoppage Segura - Stoppage i am going out on a limb to make things interesting :deal
Big move banker. Povetkin is still relatively in experienced still, and Byrd is somewhat under rated. I don't think this will be as easy a fight as everyone thinks. If byrd comes in good shape he could be a very tough fight. He has mainly sturggled against the really big Heavies, which from memory won't be a problem with Povetkin.
yeah im not sold on Povetkin - i watched a few of his fights on youtube and i wasnt overly impressed. He throws alot of big looping hooks and seems to be quite inaccurate with his punches. He has only had 13 pro fights and the best on the resume was a win over Larry Donald who was coming off two losses and a draw with Ray Austin . He doesnt seem to be as big and hard hitting as some of the other guys Byrd has faced either so i cant see Byrd looking intimidated like he did against Wlad. I just pray Byrd comes in shape and hasnt lost too much of his hand speed :good
Style wise Wlad was a terrible fight for Byrd, simply because he was so big, and could out box and out punch Byrd from the outside. Wlad is probably the only fighter in the heavies right now who is actually faster then Byrd, which pretty much meant he had no way of beating him. This should be a really interesting test for Povetkin. Will give you a a tonne of credit if you pick this against the odds.
Your analysation of Povetkin is pretty spot on too. He will probably succeed in a lackluster HW division, but is no world beater. I have noticed lately that your boxing knowledge seems to have really improved, and your posts on some fights have been pretty spot on. Have you been watching a lot more boxing recently?
thanks mate :good, yeah i have been trying to avoid the lounge and spend a bit more time posting about boxing - after all thats why we are all here! Now that i have access to the worldboxingvideoarchive again i have been watching 9 or 10 fights a week so i think my knowledge has prob. improved a bit but with that said - half the guys who we tip i have never heard of
I quite like Povetkin, I don't really recall him looping his hooks that much, but then it's been a while since I last looked at one of his fights. Povetkin is good combination puncher with fast hands, and solid (not great power), technically he's quite well rounded, defence could use a little fine tuning, but he moves well, keeps good balance, can fight inside or out, and has a big kit of punches. He has a lot of tools, the only area he's really lacking in are the physical ones, he needs to build up some strength (preferrably fast twitch muscle type, build up his speed and power at the same time), he's hired a strength coach as of late so we'll see if any extra mass he's put on has slowed him down. If he manages to build up a little more speed and power, as well as shore up his defence a bit more, he could easily rule the current division. Personally I think Byrd is just about done, he's been slowing down more and more with each fight, he's looked thicker late into his career but it hasn't really translated into a better punch. Now he's comming off a long layoff and is up against an active hungry fighter, sometimes guys look good comming off layoffs, but with a fighter like Byrd whos' speed and reflexes play a big part of his game, I can't see any positives comming from this layoff. I'll go out on a limb and pick Povetkin by stoppage when I put up my tips, it'll be a decent scrap, but I think Povetin will get on top of him as the fight goes on and break him down late, Byrd will get in some decent shots but it'll be one sided on the whole. At this stage I think Byrd is a step up from Donald in name only... a fight with Brock will be much more interesting/difficult.
