The book mentioned this particular 1906 clip and indicated that it was simply a staged two round affair designed to provided the public with some evidence of the former great in action. According to the author, a 10' ring was used and while there were two-three rows of actual people seated ringside there were some additional rows of painted pictures of attendees behind them.
Yes, as you say it's a tiny ring, and there hands were not wrapped ,prior to being gloved up. Its not on Dixon's record ,probably similar to Corwett v Courtney. Dixon would be about 36 here, I believe.
Although George Dixon might have been the greates fighter of his era, there is still a lot about his title reign that is shrouded in fog. Hopefully this book will adress some of this.
Other than his size, reputation, place in the timeline of African American champions and his participating in the 1892 carnival that concluded w Sullivan/Corbett there is very little detail I know about this fighter ... maybe because the little guys simply never interested me that much .. however I will try and get my hands on the boof for sure. Thanks for the heads up Clay.
