Hi there, i've recently started lurking these forums and have decided to make an account so i could ask some questions to help me on my journey. quick info: I'm 5'11 about 150ish; 18 years old 1: I seem to have a problem measuring distance between me and my opponent, like i spar a lot against a guy shorter then me but he always seems to tag me when we go in to jab each other when i should be able to pop him with easy jabs:huh 2: I was thinking about maybe adopting the philly shell stance and shoulder rolling more punches(thoughts on this stance and how should i know if i can pull it off or not) 3.I start to get frustrated a lot, because i do a shiit load of research online on any way to improve in boxing and new tips to pick up. I'll go and do decent on pads or other workouts but when it comes to sparring i just can't seem to get the "hit and not be hit" aspect of boxing. What can i do to change this guys I'll be posting more questions throughout the thread, and am thankfully for any helpful advice you guys submit from this point i'm just looking to be a student of this amazing sport thats really helping me in a lot of aspects of my life.
I have one, but sometimes i feel as if he's forcing his style onto me and not enhancing what feels natural to me:-(.
stop worrying about that, i've already thought about that and chose my alternatives. Why don't you just focus on the questions i've asked for help with:deal
You won't know until you get a new trainer what defence he thinks you should employ. No point asking people on the internet. Your time would be spent far more productively getting set with the new trainer and having him make recommendations having seen and worked out in the ring with you :good
i see...well thats not a option right now so i guess i'll figure something out but thanks for the answer
What feels natural to you is almost definitely 100% wrong. Boxing is not natural. Tips on the webz will do less than 1% of what consistent sparring will do for you. As a beginner, understand that just because something isn't working in the ring doesn't mean you should stop trying it.
"if something isn't working in the ring doesn't mean you should stop trying" say what  but what happened to "use what works throw away what doesn't". And if what you say about what feels natural is definitely wrong then yeah maybe i should just follow what the guy says instead of trying to learn things on my own
Like I said, boxing isn't natural. Just because it doesn't work now doesn't mean it won't work once you get good at it. I mean, if it's getting you beaten up then avoid it, but generally things take time to click and that's what sparring is for. You won't really have a concept of what your style is til you've sparred over 100 rounds. At that point, you'll have an idea of what works for you and what doesn't.
=/...i see i thought i was doing something crazy wrong because the first time i sparred this guy(was my first spar ever, and he's already had experience) i was tagging him up and down with my jab :bbb but its just i couldn't set myself to throw more combos. I go into the 2nd round with that mindset next thing i know we're both jabbing each other in the face constantly when my jab should be able to keep him away Guess i'll keep working and learn from getting beaten up some more
What ever you do, don't do this. Learn the basics first other wise you'll develop bad habits. Foot work, defense and your jab - 3 key aspects
