I bought his video back in the 90s that was sold through his Church. I scored it from KO magazine....... "Shavers: Greatest one punch hitter" or close to that title...... It is okay.. It could've been better, but I ain't whining... I still want a copy of "Shavers-Tillis" from 1982 and "Shavers-Mercado" from '80.... I NEED that action in full..... MR.BILL
**** Ali ate some huge flush right hands from Ernie, that looked every bit as hard as the bomb that flattened Holmes, yet still stayed on his feet. Talk about a granite chin.
Beautiful devastation, the Black Destroyer sure has atomic power. :boxer Would love to see him slugging it out with Tyson from the Ruddock fights.
Shavers said that he knocked holmes down with the hardest punch he has ever landed in his boxing career. Says a lot about Larry. Im tryin to send you a PM but I need 50 posts first. I might be able to help you out
I've been convinced forever that the force generated from Shavers' right hand was second to no one in history. The structure of his body was built for power -a juggernaut built, a back like a wall, and long heavy arms. But it's the mechanics of how he punched that put him off the charts. Burley used to tell his young charges to imagine that their arms were ~slings and their fists weighted like ~heavy metal balls. That's how Shavers punched. What's worse for the recipient of his shots is how he would increase the whip of his right by throwing a left hook first, which naturally increased the torque of his right. Mentally, there is no regard for the humanity in front of him. Great punchers have to suspend any subconscious inkling of that in order to punch through the target --the dehumanized target. Devastating stuff.
That was a great post, one of the best that I've seen on these boards in the few years I've been here. Kudos dood'. :happy:happy:happy
Funny to note in how many of those fights shown, he was actually KO'd. Still, I don't think I would want to eat one of those right uppercuts. No sir, I'll pass.
Near embarrassing moment: In the '80s, was introduced to Shavers at Ali's ol' gym in Venice, Cal. If I didn't dig my toes into the ground for dear life when we shook hands, hedda lifted me like a feather.
Now that's a tremendously fascinating statement. Up to 1950, Tunney rated the first hook Dempsey flattened Willard with as the hardest single punch of the first half of the century, and the first right hand Max Baer dropped Carnera with as the second hardest punch of that era (Primo should be in the IBHOF just for getting up from that lethal bomb). Archie Moore ranked the first right hand Yvon Durelle decked him with as the hardest shot he ever took in his 220 fight career. (Durelle's right was virtually identical to Baer's.) Everybody who got knocked down by these punches got back up, champions all. (Uzcudun also got up at seven from the hardest punch Louis ever delivered.) Based upon what Shavers has said, could it be that Larry recovered to win from the hardest single shot with gloves ever delivered in a boxing ring?
