Footage from the Bivins 4th fight September 13th 1948, we had some different footage from this that showed a more closer angle but this is in much better quality.

Supossedly Charles carried Bivins on this so maybe thats why he looks a little sluggish although i like the way he digs those left hands to the body.

Good bodywork but he looks more like a sloppy slugger than a crafty technician in much of the footage.

Thanks for posting this. Excellent film quality.

But if I didn't know, I would never have guessed, I was watching two HOFers!

Important footage. And maybe evidence that even the greats have the odd off night?

Especially fighting 7 times a year. No way can you properly peak that often.

I agree. Charles to me is like Griffith in a lot of ways in that he fought down or up to his level of opposition and was content to just win in workmanlike fashion. If you didnt push him he wasnt going to get nasty, or kick it into high gear. Robinson was like this sometimes as well. He has some highlight reel KOs but he also has some boring decisions where he was happy to just box his way to decision as he had things well in hand.

This footage isnt new though. This fight actually exists near complete. About 30 minutes or so.

What other film of Charles in the 40s do you own?

They had. Im sure that had an impact but Griffith could be pretty boring before he killed Paret. In all of these cases these guys had another gear or two they could slip into and really run away with a fight but a lot of the time (most of the time with Griffith and Charles) they were fine with just getting a victory. If you really tried to press them they could get nasty but if they had things well in hand they were content to just stay in front and get the W. Its why Charles never really connected with fans. Robinson had a lot more exciting performances and knockouts so he was always really popular. Griffith, who I love, I dont know how he was so popular. Tremendous athlete, gentleman, always in shape, but not much passion. Fans dont usually like that but he was popular regardless.

Even if you are in your prime that's a tough ask.
