What a ***** this guy is...:-( Six-time world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., who announced in May that he is coming out of retirement, is on a quest to obliterate five-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez in a mega-fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 19, 2009. The fight, which was originally slated to take place July 18th, was postponed due to a rib injury sustained by Mayweather. In a conference call today, Mayweather would not divulge exactly how that injury occurred, and became aggressive with reporters who were asking simple, basic questions. Did it come from sparring? A body shot? Hitting the bag? Did you not hear me? he griped. I got hurt in training and Ill leave it at that. Joined by Floyd on the call were the promoters of the big fight, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Productions, and Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions. Floyd seemed slightly elusive and annoyed, spouting off his answers to reporters expected questions with a lackluster sigh: I think with the layoff, he began, that was a good thing. I was pushing myself to the limit. As far as reasoning for his 20 month layoff, he explained that he had his first fight in 1987, and hed never had a break. I guess I needed a break. A vacation. Boxing is still in me. I still miss the sport. God has truly blessed me with a talent. My talent is boxing. I think a lot of times when a guy is super confident, they want to see you fail because they dont believe in themselves like yourself. That comes with being an entertainer, an athlete, being in the sport. When I was in training camp a while back, I was performing well and I was looking good. It counts once you get under the lights. Ill have to see how I perform under the lights. My dad (Floyd Sr., who recently reconnected with Floyd) came to the gym and said, Youre okay. He said with a little more hard work, youre going to be okay. He said its just shaking off the cob webs. Im anticipating getting back into the ring so bad, its making me work so hard. Im getting up at 4:00a.m. just to work on my craft, just so I can stay sharp. I know all of these young fighters are trying to gun for me. Im an old cat in the sport of boxing. Im going to stay mentally strong, and Ill be okay mentally. Ive been through a lot of physical mishaps before. I just didnt want to go into this fight when I wasnt 100%. I wasnt always 100%. Im happy that me and my team agreed that I dont have to go out there if Im not 100%. When probed further about his rib injury, he skirted around the issue, never answering the question: It happened in training. It wasnt a small guy that done it. It didnt even come from sparring. Nobody dont really know what it came from. Freak accidents happen in training. We do a lot of different training in workouts. It was just a freak accident. When it happened, I tried to work through it. I was fine for a while. Then it happened again. I cant try to be a superhero. Its best to take a little time off and let it heal, so when I do go out and perform, Ill perform to the best of my ability. Ill never tell exactly what happened, he hastily continued. But September 19, you wont be able to tell. Ill be at my best. When probed further about why he was being secretive about the injury, he snapped, Who said it was a secret? I got hurt in training, and Ill leave it at that. I dont have to go in depth about what happened to me. When asked about Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather had plenty to say: I feel Manny is a good fighter. When he goes out there, he does his job to the best of his ability. The thing is this when Pacquiao got beat by Eric Morales, I was at the top of my game. I never got beat. He hasnt done nothing I havent done. Hes been following behind me. Its like a steak. A T-bone steak. I eat all the meat off the steak, and they throw him the bone. Hes doing what hes supposed to do. Everyone knows hes a good fighter. All of a sudden, he wins a couple of fights and hes a great fighter. Where was Pacquiao in the 90s when I was dominating? I dont have anything bad to say about the guy, but this guy never called me out, never even said he wanted to fight me! Everybody knows its not hard to find me. Im a totally different fighter. We dont like to talk about our personal business, but everybody knows that hes not going to get 50-50 with Floyd Mayweather. See what he grossed in his last two fights? See what I grossed in my last two fights? Its a business. Even though its a sport. In an unusual style for Mayweather, he had nothing but nice things to say about Marquez, instead focusing his irritation on Pacquiao: If I had to rank Marquez, between him and Manny, Id rank him over Manny. For a guy who gets knocked down three times and then comes back and gets a draw... Bob Arum always has one trick up his sleeve. Marquez is a Mexican warrior. He represents his Mexican heritage extremely well. I know hes going to be at his best. The only thing Ive got to do is go out there and be me. Be smart. I still got fight in me. Ill reach the highest level I will possibly reach. Theres no other fighter in the sport of boxing whos done what Ive done. Ive been off for almost two years, he continued. When youve been off for two years and had a chance to relax and grow as a human being mentally not physically, but mentally. I feel what makes you a man is taking care of your responsibilities. You can be 21 and that makes you an adult. But taking care of your responsibilities makes you a man. I am the best at my job. I train so long, everybody leaves. Ill be the last one in the gym. Ill have to lock up the gym. Dont nobody know what I go through. Im telling you right now, I dont care if you write something negative. I dont read the articles. Write what you want to write. A critic criticizes something you cant do. Yall dont tell the truth. Talk about Shane Mosley taking steroids. You dont hear none of these guys calling me out. And if they do call me out, they only want a pay day. And guys like Marquez, hes a good guy, he really wants a shot. We could pay Manny. Is you ready? Let me know. I aint worried about that. With or without him, Im comfortable. Im happy. He dont mean ****. I dont chase opponents. Opponents chase me. Thats not the biggest fight. The biggest fight in boxing is Mayweather versus anybody. It dont matter who I fight. All my fights is big fights, baby. I just dont understand these people, he went on. They dont know what theyre talking about. If they want to know the sport of boxing, just hang around the Mayweather family. All I do is sit at the movie theater at my house and eat junk food. Just like Im doing right now (immediate munching crackled through the phone). All fights are one more fight for me. All fights are shape up fights. All jokes aside, this aint one more fight for me. I cant overlook this fight. De La Hoya was focused on losing weight and not on fighting. I think he was only training when the cameras were on him. Youve got to take this sport serious. You cant just train to lose weight. Chasing money can screw your whole career up. Im just being honest. When asked about the sudden passing of Arturo Gatti, Mayweather sent his thoughts and love out to his family. Hes the only guy I know who can lose, who can sell out an arena and they are going to be there again. A good friend of mine, a young woman, said, I came to see you fight before. I came to see you fight in Atlantic City. You made me cry. You beat my favorite fighter, Arturo Gatti. I hated you for that, until I really found out about the sport. And the next fight she was there, supporting him again. His fan base was crazy. When discussing Bob Arum, he said, He got a lot of people in his pocket, which is not good. The one thing about Richard Schaefer and Leonard, they work for the fighter. The fighter works for Bob Arum. I was with Bob for I dont know how long. I think hes upset that I did a creative move. I paid to become my own boss. He still owes me money for the Gatti fight. For the Zab Judah fight. Yall write this down: Manny has the worst contract in boxing right now. 27%. I keep 100% of my money. 27%! Are you serious? With the hard work I put in, whos been dominating for the longest? Whos been around for the longest? What about Shane Mosley? Ive been around when he was undefeated. You still taking steroids. What are you talking about? We all know what people give us. If someone gives you water, you know its water. If someone gives you a Sprite, you know its kind of bubbly. All these fighters know they can get a payday with me.
He rambles incessantly about everything, i find it hard to listen to him, just get in the ring and show us the magic already!
Meh, anyone who has issue with the way Floyd gives interviews is deluding themselves. Floyd is supremely confident and truly believes in himself as the biggest show in boxing, that's part of the reason he's so good because he trains with no fear, he doesn't fear the opponent he's about to fight. I think he's joking himself when he says he's the biggest fight in boxing though, he needs the nice guy/golden boy (like a Pac, Hatton or Oscar or Gatti) to make him the draw as the villain. I personally like Floyd's style, it's nice to have a guy confident enough to **** talk 90% of his opponents before a fight, it worked for Ali, no one liked him at the time either.
Mayweather is comedy I think some people juss don't understand his sarcasim and his bein an *******...I find it funny and as long as he is undefeated he can really say what he wants...With that said if ARUM IS ****IN WITH PAC'S MONEY THAT MUCH THAN HE IS A GREEDY MUH FU34A!
I quite like his interviews actually (not as much as his uncle`s mind you) but I strongly disagree with the 50/50 thing, if he doesnt accept 50/50 with Manny then he would be as well retiring again because Im sure I`ll not be the only fan that classes him as non-existent (or void as farmboxer might say)
Floyd is blackballed from Top rank, They want him to go broke. (When he realizes this, He will be a better person for it.) No Cotto, No Pacquiao...ect Only Marquez, Mosley's & Williams in his future, AkA he is ****ed!!!!! (Unless he pissed off Goosen, Then he's SOL w/ a Pwill fight) yeah right, Like he'd fight Willy...LMAO
lol, Utter bollocks. Floyd could fight Mosley, Williams, Marquez and make $10 mil a fight. Pacquaio really only has Cotto as a legitimate option.
It's fine if Floyd would crap-talk against his opponents if the talk made sense most of the time or he backed it up and actually fought the people he talks the most junk about. He talks about guys like Cotto or Mosley having losses as reasons to justify not fighting them and he's said belts don't make him, but he fought a journeyman champion in Baldomir with many losses because he was the "true champion" with the lineal belt. Now he's acting like he's a super-draw and deserves more money than Pac, when the reality is that he was only decent at best as a draw against opponents not named Hoya or Hatton. Pacquaio-JMM II did better PPV numbers than any Floyd fight did prior to Hoya or Hatton, and PBF-JMM doesn't appear to be doing so hot, so apparently Floyd needs a popular dance partner to draw a crowd until proven otherwise. Floyd also said he would punish Oscar when they fought, and proceeded to eek out a win in unimpressive fashion when fight night came. Ali might have talked junk, but his talk wasn't empty. Floyd has yet to prove that there's any substance in his words. And neither Floyd or Pac will fight Williams, and Pac has the same options in terms of Mosley, Cotto, or Marquez now.
really .. if your a fan of floyd things are falling perfectly into place with him - fights (& probably beats) jmm to gain steam for the pacman fight - fights pacman - shane & cotto meanwhile stay busy until one of them become more important than the other - floyd fights shane/cotto... then retires
I Dont see a Pacquiao fight after that interview, it seems to me like Floyd is content on fighting the fights that he will make the most on for himself, sure he will make alot with pacquiao but he wont have that extra 10% he is after, its an ego thing more than a money thing Floyd wants the bigger share of the money to be able to say "He was the draw all along" Dont bank on him fighting Pacquiao I think he retires again after Marquez gives him a tuff fight.
nah check it out tho.. floyd could get 40 % out of a fight with pacman and that will be more than 75% of a fight with shane or cotto
I know this but Floyd if he is going to be in a fire fight he is going to make the most out of it, meaning he will demand to get paid
