New foe for Gamboa! Friday, March 28 2008 By Lee Bates Unbeaten super featherweight sensation Yuriorkis Gamboa (9-0, 8 KOs) will now face Darling Jimenez (23-2-2, 14 KOs) his May 17th HBO debut. Jiminez has won six straight, all by KO. Gamboa was originally slated to face WBO #2 Ranked Marcos Ramirez (25-0, 16 KOs), but Ramirez decided not to take the fight. A 2004 Olympic Gold medal winner for Cuba, Gamboa opened eyes in his U.S. television debut back in February as he brutally knocked out Johnny Edwards in one round on ESPN2 to win the NABF super featherweight title. He has been so impressive that after just nine fights, he is rated WBA #5 and WBC #8 respectively.
Seems like a bit of a step down - but not Gamboas fault. I am very keen to see Gamboa, when he faces some elite. Right now he is too superior to anyone thrown at him - despite them not being tomato cans. I would like him to evolve a more tactical sense, but from the fights I have seen - it's all about knocking out the other guy asap. The guy has talent - no question about it - and he shouldn't be mistreated like Vargas was - so I will have to wait a few years - to see how great this upcoming Superstar is gonna be.
i think he was initially suposed to face Rojas, then Ramirez, and now Jimenez Don't be so quick to blame his opponents for pulling out maybe Gamboa's management decided not to take too big a step up, which is smart really.
I think Gamboa pulled out of that one when he realized Ramirez was available. But I could be tragically wrong:deal
Jimenez only two losses come by mixed decision to two decent fighters(Fernando Trejo and Miguel Angle Huerta) and he's coming off a win over former WBO champion Mike Anchondo . So you have to say for a fighter less than a year into his pro career this is extremely impressive(even when you consider what he has done in the Am's) .
I'm pretty sure that fight had to be cancelled because of a Showtime/HBO conflict (the Rojas fight was supposed to be on Shobox, then a few weeks later Gamboa signed a fight with HBO). Darling Jimenez is definitely a step down, but it's not a bad opponent. His only losses are close decisions against C/C+ level fighters who are not weak punchers. His chin seems pretty solid, so it will be interesting to see how fast Gamboa KO's him.
Good post... It is unreal. This guy just has sickening potential, and obviously very high confidence in his own ability. He must be owning people in sparring for his handlers to be THIS confident at such a young stage of his career.
This isn't a gimme fight. Jimenez is a really good fighter. Matter of fact, I'd say he's more proven than Ramirez was. This fight will tell us where exactly Gamboa stands.
Sucks for Yuri, a win against Ramirez would've been great for him. Instead he'll just take this guy apart in 4.
I for my part wouldnt mind Gamboa take on an easier opponent now and then. He has been matched incredibly toughly from the beginning of his pro career. Gamboa has passed all tests in a very convincing way. However,he,too,is just a human being. Nobody will call him a bum if he knocks out a journeyman once in a while earning an easy paycheck against an opponent who doesnt pose a threat.
