I think there's something to this argument, even if I'm going to disagree. Malik Scott voiced it well in his IFL interview, the upshot being that Wilder acted the way he felt and to do otherwise would've been an act of hypocrisy. I can go along with that, to an extent. However the act of acknowledging each other post fight isn't in my view primarily a sign of personal respect, although that comes into it. To me, it's a ritual to mark the ending of hostilities and an acknowledgment of the other party, (regardless of the outcome's) actions. That there were two men who shared the ring, fought it out according to a set of pre-arranged rules and that the fight is over. It's perfectly possible, at least as I see it, to shake hands/embrace utter some simple words of acknowledgment either side and still say 'I don't like the guy' or even 'I don't respect him'. The respect being shown is to the idea of boxing as a sport and a contest and, yes, an ancient ritual.

Someone above posted a video with Wilder's repeatedly voiced, idiotic call for 'a body on his record'. I didn't like it not just because it was stupid and appealed to the most stupid amongst us, not because the underlying sentiment was barbaric, but because it showed a fundamental disrespect to boxing, the same disrespec he's showed to a trainer who mastered far more of the skills of boxing than Wilder ever has. An elder who he disrespected publicly and threw under the bus when he couldn't come to terms with his own failure and his own part therein.

Wilder's behaviour throughout has been that of an indulged man-child, someone surrounded with a coterie of craven yes men and cynical money guys who will say and do anything to placate him long enough for the check to clear. He gets in that ring and fights with the heart of a warrior, but he's missing a key part of the warrior's make-up, the part that should've guided his actions pre and post fight. The man's judgement that overrides the childish ego. That stops him voicing those vacuous statements, or at least tempers them. That post fight, even in the depths of his disappointment, allows him to go through with that small ritual of acknowledgement for the only person that truly shared that fight with him.

I'm glad this new statement has been put out, probably by a team that's been viewing the post fight reaction and judged, rightly, that this was hurting Wilder's image and future marketability. I don't need to see Wilder humble himself, I don't need to see him do anything, but I'd like him to have handled himself a little better in this and in many other things. There's a lot to like about Wilder and his story for all the daft stuff that surrounds him. It would just be nice to see some signs of maturity, some growth, a leaving behind of the man child persona. The end of the fight was an opportunity for that and I think he spurned it. I think that was a mistake, whatever he was feeling.
