Thought the fellas at classic would enjoy this one… released to my best knowledge 13 days ago. Looks like the Argentinian fella put Ali down for a second there, I think he got him on the temple near the ear maybe? Can’t tell… in these sorts of situation I guess he wanted to have his moment with the champ - bit rude.

Great footage. Ali looks young and fast. But my guess is he still wasn't back to 100%.

Always interesting how new footage shows up out of nowhere.

Now only if we could get Harry Greb to emerge from nowhere.

I don’t know where Ali was in the 70s… lots of stuff suggests he was still working, he drove around with his gear in his car and gym hopped, his first issue with Norton came during his exile in a spar. I think he looked really good in the 70s, he got smarter I think it made him a better fight to lose a little to gain a lot of smarts when his attributes started to decline (or the comp had surpassed his previous skill set) he became a thinking fighter rather then an athlete IMO. I think Frazier put him on the path of smartening up, he couldn’t just run the table (anymore) with his physicality.

No worries - I wish we could know what Ali was working on here, or anywhere. Sparring is where you learn and if you find good work on camera and not just play I always sit and wonder “what was he thinking of developing that day… did the other guy prevent him from doing it?” Ali was a smart guy with whacky technique, kinda like Manuel Medina but ya know the arguable number 1 of his division lol so I’d be curious to his plan.

I assume this is his exhibition in Buenos Aires in November 1971, which means the opponents are sparring partner James Summerville and Argentine champion Miguel Angel Paez.

Paez beat Bonavena. Ali looks fleshy there, almost as fleshy as he did for Young

Yes - this is a couple of weeks before the Buster Mathis fight, where he came in at the heaviest weight of his career until Young.

He was a great fighter, with great heart, a ton of dog in him, confident beyond measure. Not overly skilled but preternaturally fast. And a big, strong athlete.

I just hate watching the shuffling and dancing and all the other bs that casuals refer to as "great boxing"... And too often those casuals were judging his fights in the 70's.
