I love to watch it. The shuffle and the flicking jabs have always been Poetry in Motion to me.
It was the key to success during his first pre-exile career.
In his 2nd career it was more of a gimmick and especially after 1975 it got more and more a reminiscence of his trademark, but still nice to watch.

Pre exile it was not as flashy and more for actual effect, always staying a step or two ahead of the opponent and being able to use his hand speed from unpredictable angles that he could switch before the opponent could see it

Post exile it was more just like hey look at me I'm Muhammad Ali, I didn't even care for his shenanigans in the Bonavena fight, his best post exile fights where he actually had to fight he didn't really do anything like that like vs Frazier and Foreman

It's like the in ring version of how he wouldn't shut up about rope a doping during Foreman's gauntlet exhibition, equally as annoying and pointless imo

He did it in the pre exile manner in the second Frazier fight

Preach! It is just BS. How do you score those flicking jabs when he “gets up on his toes” lol they’re slaps, he’s wheeling the jab doing nothing look what happened when Holmes tried it against Tyson… it’s really good at putting both guys out or range and looking busy I guess lol - it looks good against Coopman, Williams, Evenaglista etc but he was a lot more stationary against his best opponents for a reason. He was a smart fighter but so fundamentally broken and to me an awful viewing.

How do you know he was playing? Genuine question.

In what way is slapping people and shuffling your feet a key to success in a fist fight?
