This content is protected What up? Man, Roy, in my opinion, does need to hang it up. I went to the fight...all the way from Indianapolis. To see my dude get beat by a fighter who I still don't think too highly broke my heart. Roy tricked me into thinkin I was about to see him spank Joe. Some say shot, and some say he has no legs. It seemed to me that he just didn't have the will. He should take one more winnable fight, and gracefully bow out. He don't need the dough...but fame's a *****. He needs the acclaim. Imo, he's the best I have ever seen with my own eyes in live action (I can't talk that Sugar Ray Robinson talk cause that's way before my time) anyway...keep doin what you do. I hope Verno fights good, but PWill is too much. Hope Monte bounces back, and I also hope my other fave Al "Love and Happiness" Greene Sets the division on fire! Leon's Response: Perhaps you should begin to hold Calzaghe in higher regard. I thought Jones was going to win the fight as well, so you're not the only one who was surprised. Jones claims that the fight would have (in my opinion it's more of a could have) been different have some validity to them since the bleeding was never stopped and he's never been cut before. G, I used to think the same thing about Joe Calzaghe. I now realize there is no way you can say Prime Roy gets by Prime Joe. Roy should have beat Joe this time around I picked him to win. Roy is without a doubt a far more skillful boxer than Joe. I just think that JC has that one variable that like Jones you either have it or you don't (gifted athlete) that is he has a will to win that helps him prevail in fights were he is not the best fighter, puncher, **** you name it. Some how he wins and I believe that a lot of people are not giving JC enough credit for that. Leon's Response: Joe Calzaghe is one of the best fighters in the world for a reason. His workrate is incredible an his offense is his defense. There isn't another fighter like him in the world and he's a problem for everyone. The only person I think could give him problems is Chad Dawson and Joe C will never fight Chad because there's not enough money behind it and at the end of the day I would still pick Calzaghe to win. Hey G. As an American boxing fan, I've been quite disapointed lately by the performances of both Roy Jones Jr and Paulie Malignaggi. Let's start with Roy: I'm not going to sit here and say he's done because I don't believe that. What I DO believe is that he showed Joe (who make no mistake fought a great fight) way too much respect, and should've went after him in the first. It was a glancing shot yes, but when I saw Joe's reaction to it, I was not sure he'd be able to continue if pressed. Roy let him off the hook and Joe did what great fighters do. Secondly, Paulie Malignaggi could have won his fight with Ricky Hatton with basically one hand, but instead elected to fight Hatton's fight. The British fans I watched the fight with we're telling me I should be impressed with Hatton's 'new style'. My retort was "same ol' Ricky". Still leads with his head, comes in in straight lines with little or no head movement and throws wide hooks, which was enough to beat Malignaggi who, it looked at times, refused to throw a right cross. Congrats to Ricky, who at the very least secures another mulit million dollar payday to lose to the winner of De La Hoya/Pacquiao, which will be a very interesting fight. In closing, I'd like ask who you'd like to see fight in 2009, regardless of all of the political BS and what not. I have a short list and will compare and contrast with you on my return trip. Thanks. Matt Leon's Response: Paulie had a good first round and then he got dominated. He didn't throw his right hand and he fought like it was broken or like Bayless was going to deduct a point for throwing it. Paulie initiated every clinch and fought like a junior welterweight Jawny Ruiz. In short he clearly wasn't himself. I firmly believe that the fight should have continued so he would have had the moral victory he appeared to be looking for from the middle rounds on. Kudos to Hatton for taking care of business and adding another victory over a former junior welterweight champion to his ledger. Look for Ricky to sit a while before he face Oscar De La Hoya sometime next year. Hey G, what's up? Jones is FINISHED! But...If he continues he needs to DROP Merkerson! Roy has gotten STALE with Merkerson in his corner, if he is to continue Roy needs to work on some new things his stichke has gotten old. Hatton looked renewed and revived with Mayweather training him maybe a change like this will work for Roy since he is determined to continue tarnishing his legacy! I think Roy is one of the GREATS so I don't want to see him get hurt. He just wasn't PREPARED adequately for what Calzaghe BRINGS to the table, and is it not a trainers job to see that his stead is prepared? On other fronts, Hatton looked good and did different things against Malignaggi. The Hitman made Paulie miss with his jab and would counter effectivley not all of the time but enough of the time. A few more training camps with Floyd Sr and Hatton could really be formidible! Kirkland is a STUD but he needs to work on his skills developement. Anne Wolfe says conditioning and heart mean more than skills, in the beginning YES, but as you move up the ladder into the elite levels of the sweet science skills play a bigger part and right now Kirkland just doesn't have enough skill. Alfredo Angulo who has a wealth of amateur experience would eat Kirkland's lunch but it would be a good fight while it lasted. Leon's Response: In my best Roy Jones Jr allow me to tell you, "Roy ain't gonna drop Coach Merk. What for? It's like I been told you, the cut stops bleeding I win the fight. The next time I would have knocked him down would have been the last and nobody be saying nothing about Coach Merk right now if the bleeding would've been stopped. I ain't never been cut before and you got a cutman there to control the cut, my cut was not controlled and because the cut wasn't controlled, Roy wasn't able to control the fight, you feel me?"
paulie was not outclassed he was winning the 1st rd and a half and he got hurt bad with a big right hand and the whole fight changed....props to hatton for that
hatton has taken one risk and has beateb one great fighter...tszyu..and he was past his prime...i give hatton credit for the PM fight but not the PBF fight...that wasn't about heart it was about making 10 million dollars....he is a great fighter in his own way but he is no calzaghe
