http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=23478&more=1 and as a big Toney fan, I can only say that it's a disppointing interview again... There are no real news about his plans in boxing, no dates for a possible fight, nothing. Only the same old story 'the Klitscho sisters duck me, Haye ducks me, nobody wants to fight me, boohoo...' All he wants is to face the Klitschkos or Haye for a big paycheck, but he must realize that he is in no position to get a title-shot right now (to be fair, Ruiz, Kevin Johnson and Arreola didn't deserve their title-shots either. Nor does Sosnowski). Jonathan Banks and Tony Thompson wanted to fight Toney on ESPN. That's a fact. Both these fights would have made sense. But there was not enough money on the table for Toney.. And IF he would have looked good beating either one of them (and that's a big IF), he would without a doubt have gotten a title-shot very soon, as he would have been one of the top US HWs again then, and with a big name too. 'Jonathan Banks is not worth my breath' - Toney is delusional. Banks is one of the top US prospects out there, and he's willing to fight. What about Toneys old credo 'anybody anywhere anytime'??? I'm just telling it how it is. Imo, Toney should just retire now, he's showing signs of being punchdrunk, and he doesn't have to prove us anything more - he's an ATG. That said, he's 100% right about the Hopkins-Roy Jones II fight.
i actually would not mind toney fighting vitali instead of sosinowski, but i am guessing toney would only agree to fight vitali if the fight was moved to america as toney simply does not fight in his opponents backyard which is the reason he has not got many title shots in the last 10 years. as cruiser weight and heavyweight have been dominated by europeans and to get a shot most times you have to travel.
I agree with Sean on this. Toney seems to enjoy fighting in the states, to crowds who tend to support him. I still believe Toney could be a player in a wide open heavyweight division, one that pretty much gives anyone a title shot. The fact that right after Rahman quit in his match against Toney in there second fight, after being countered beautifully in the second round. He goes and gets a match against Wlad. Vitali is now fighting his second **** fighter in a row. So a name fighter like Toney always is one fight away from getting a shot, he just needs to have that match and see where it takes him.
I think Toney would fight Vitali in Germany if the paycheck is right. If he's willing to travel to the Wembley arena, he's also willing to travel to Germany. Toney is desperate for a big paycheck and a title-fight. Problem is, Toney thinks he's still relevant in the HW game (he's the IBA champ, the true HW champ...), so he deserves a huge paycheck. He has to realize that he has to prove first that he's still good enough to get that paycheck and that title-shot against the Klitschkos/Haye, he can't just talk his ass into one of these fights right now, but all he does is talk, make youtube clips and waste his time with MMA training.
James Toney really lets his fans down these days. He complaints that nobody wants to fight him but we all know that the rated Tompson and Banks offered him fights. And you are right, Toney has not done anything lately which would warrant a title shot. His UFC adventure seems to be a sad episode.
I agree with the second part of your post. Toney is an ATG legend, he's a US HW with a big name and one single good performance would get him another title-shot imo. But I'm not sure if Toney can give us another good performance against a top HW in the first place. It would be good to find out, and Jonathan Banks and Tony Thompson would have been excellent opportunities for him to show what he really has left. They would have been perfect opponents for that 'one fight away', as you put it. But - Toney's not fighting them, he's sitting around and complains that he doesn't get a title-shot instead..
I agree, though how many times has James been ****ed over the last 5 years. First the Ruiz fight, he destroyed Ruiz back in 05. He gets hit with that steroid ****. Then he faces Peter in 06, a fight a scored 1 point in favor of Toney. He gets the loss. Then the worst one of all, Rahman suffering the baby cut over his eye, where in the 3rd round Toney was countering and hurting Rahman. Yet, Rahman gets Wlad in his next fight. How is that fair? I'm a decent Toney fan, who has followed him closely throughout his career. I do believe his best days are behind him. Though that hasn't stopped guys like Rahman, Briggs, McCall, Golota, Holyfield etc... From either getting shots or becoming champ in their late 30's to early 40's. Toney has a chance in this terrible division, as long as he gives up the UFC **** and gets back to the sport he once was so great at.
Toney is an all time great fighter and has always fought the best. But if he's not willing to face someone like Banks or Thompson(tough style match up there), to get back in title talks then his career is over. He may be holding out for that one big payday but he's becoming more irrelevant as he stays inactive. If he would have beat a semi credible opponent months ago then he could be fighting Vitali instead of Sosnowski.
Toney quite simply needs to get off his fat arse and get some fights scheduled, arsing around with the UFC all detracts from his credibility and the ability for fighters to be willing to face him i just wish he would do SOMETHING, ANYTHING
you have to understand german tv , they simply do not show james toney fights over the last 15 years on there main boxing channels so toney is just another opponent to them. german tv market there fights on the home fighter only, the opponent is irrelevent 90% of the time so they will pay toney well, but he is not going to get anywhere near parity unless he was the champ. james toney would make a way better fight for the tv audience , james comes to fight , but while the fight would have more significance to a world audience, sadly german tv, and warren if it was england truth be told, only really want the W and many times it is a case of any fighter will do, easier the better. james is not going to beat either brother now anyway, but he would make for a better spectacle and would peak the intrest of the casual and hardcore fan alike outside of germany.
Yes, proof is that Toney dropped to position 10 in the new WBC rankings, behind Banks. There is really no excuse for not fighting Thompson or Banks. Toney should retire.
He doesnt want to train or get in shape.he doesnt want to fight any note worthy opponent or set himself up in a title eliminator. Clearly with James signing with the UFC and trying to get a title shot through **** talking could only mean 1 thing...James needs money!
I have been a James Toney since the early 90's. He has been a great fighter, a true ATG. But I have enough of his trash talk because it is obvious he does not back it up in the ring anymore. He had the opportunity to fight Banks and Thompson but with the UFC move James is becoming more and more of a sideshow. I don't want to see that happen, James should retire. And I don't care what anybody says, an ATG at age 41 should not end as a fk cage fighter. That is just sad.
