I am curious what the authour thought he could bring to the issue that was new. There are already a number of superior Louis biographies.
It got a good writeup in The Chicago tribune,it is £16.99 from The Sunday Times. the sundaytimes.co.uk/bookshop .Or £18.99 from Yale Roberts is a meticulous author, and, [despite a certain poster disparaging him ], his earlier biographies of Dempsey "Jack Dempsey",and Johnson ,"Papa Jack", were both nominated for the Pulitzer prize.
Got it and read it ... Roberts is a very good author and he has his own take on his bios ... like his books on Johnson and Dempsey, he focuses on the man and his times .. you get a highbrow, sociological portrait ... in the Louis book you get a ton of back story on the men who shaped his career as well as the sport itself from that era .. how it operated, who pulled the strings, ect ... you get a bit more fleshed info and a few golden nuggets along the way about Louis and some of his opponents but really not too much on that front .. I enjoyed it but I happen to enjoy that sort of thing .. it's an acguired taste ...
I've read read both Roberts books on Dempsey and Johnson (in fact The Dempsey book was the first boxing book I ever read, got me into the sport and made me a fan of the Mauler ever since) So I'm definitely gonna be checking this one out
